Job Description

Position Title: Substance Abuse - Medical Tech

Position Status: Full-Time

Shift: All shifts

Supervisor: Registered Nurse

Work location: All

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Drug test
  • Background check – over two years since the prior criminal conviction
  • TB skin test: Must have a test or provide proof of one within the past year.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and current automobile insurance.
  • Required: CMA, CNA or CMT certification
  • Preferred experience: Electronic Medical Records (EMR) or charting systems and medication administration
  • CPR certification preferred
  • Experience within settings of substance abuse treatment, detox, and/or addiction medicine preferred

Position Summary: The Substance Abuse - Medical Tech performs a combination of administrative and medical tasks within our residential treatment facilities. The Substance Abuse – Medical Tech is responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of each client and for ensuring the highest level of care is provided. This is a dual role that has both medical team and programming team responsibilities.

Skill Sets:

Demonstrate good oral and written communication. Maintain a supportive and encouraging working relationship with supervisor, leaders, and clients. Must have basic computer skills, communication skills and demonstrate a non-judgmental and non-biased disposition regarding clients.

Physical and Environmental Demands: Visual acuity and manual dexterity are needed for the required paperwork. Frequent talking and hearing are required when communicating with co-workers, families, and other service providers. Physical demands are moderate with walking, standing, and stooping with frequent bending, stretching, twisting, and reaching out. Possible exposure to communicable diseases during contact with individuals released from various locations i.e., jails, hospitals, unsanitary conditions, rehabilitation centers, etc.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Able to provide quality customer service and help maintain the health, safety, and welfare of personnel, persons served, and stakeholders.
  2. Identifies client care requirements by establishing rapport with potential and actual clients by maintaining an open-door policy.
  3. Notify the medical provider (APRN or MD) of client concerns via the appropriate route (i.e., email for non-emergency, telephone for emergency concerns).
  4. Record patients' vital signs and document changes in medical conditions in electronic medical records.
  5. Assist with client medical care (i.e., dressing/bandage changes, medication administration).
  6. Monitor client symptoms and document daily client progress in electronic medical records using Med Tech Observation Notes.
  7. Provide clients with compassionate support, care, attention, and assistance.
  8. Perform pill counts and administer the initial dose of medications prescribed by the medical provider.
  9. Assist in infection control.
  10. Complete phone screenings and send them to appropriate team members for approval in a timely manner.
  11. Complete initial intake rapid COVID testing and report results to appropriate team members.
  12. Obtain lab specimens per medical provider (APRN or MD) orders, report results to the provider within a timely manner, and document results in electronic medical records.
  13. Provide feedback and education to all clients in collaboration with clinical and programming teams.
  14. Attend staff meetings and mandatory training per organization standards.
  15. Monitor office telephone systems, including answering calls, returning messages, completing screenings, and taking messages.
  1. Ensure and maintain client confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  2. Participate in meditation with the clients.
  3. Walk the facility and check on each client every 30 minutes.
  4. Collaborate with Program Manager and facility staff in program development.
  5. Assist in the Quality Assurance of the agency.
  6. Assist in the supervision of clients to promote safety and respond to all requests and emergencies during duty hours.
  7. Actively encourage and promote client involvement in classes/program.
  8. Assist clients in their adjustment to community living.
  9. Evaluate/monitor group attendance of participation in collaboration with the clinical team.
  10. Verbally de-escalate tense or aggressive situations to calm clients.
  11. Address and document all aggressive behaviors on the incident report form
  12. Hold accountability.
  13. Check facility and bed areas for proper cleanliness: beds must be made, no items should be on top of lockers or nightstands, etc.
  14. Monitor client visitations and observe the sign-in and sign-out process. Search visitors' bags prior to entry into the facility.
  15. Ensure clients are not using cleaning chemicals.
  16. Ensure the program is being cleaned and sanitized regularly.
  17. Provide simple meals on the weekend.
  18. Ensure the use of designated smoking areas.
  19. Other duties as assigned
