Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist and in accordance with the guidelines established by the Medical Director, functions as a technologist within the Nuclear Medicine Department. Assumes immediate responsibility for the technical operation of the Nuclear Medicine department, and assists in the supervision of daily activities of the personnel and physicians in the diagnosis of disease by performing Nuclear Medicine testing which produces imaging of patient’s organs and circulating systems through the use of radiopharmaceuticals. Calibrates equipment and closely follows radiation safety guidelines to ensure quality control and limited exposure of patient, self, and work areas to radiation. Performs all clerical and limited patient transport duties.

Education/Experience

  • Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of an Associates Degree in a Health Science Field, Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, or Nuclear Medicine in order to acquired the knowledge of nuclear theory, radiopharmaceuticals, radionuclide, dosage, patient preparation, contradictory tests, test procedure, interpretation of organ visualization procedures, and radiation dosage factors and the anatomy and physiology of human organs; and governmental and NRC license requirements.
  • Incumbents assigned to this classification must be demonstrate progress toward registry eligibility within one year of hire or already be licensed as a Nuclear Medical Technologist by the American College of Radiology,NM(ARRT) of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, CNMT ACCP or Society of Nuclear Medicine(NMTCB).
  • The analytical ability necessary to select quality images, to correlate medial histories ,lab tests, x-rays, diagnoses, etc., with Nuclear Medicine results, identify inconsistent test results, identify malfunctioning equipment/instruments and recognize, and possibly locate, trouble in radio nuclear detection and counting equipment.
  • The mathematical ability to calculate Chi Square, Linearity, and Resolutions necessary to evaluate and/or implement quality control standards.
  • The judgment necessary to decide when patient reacts during testing warrant notification of nursing personnel, and to ensure proper handling and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for Neonates, Infants, Pediatric, Adolescents, Adult, and Geriatric patients/family served.
  • Excellent attitude, interpersonal skills and communication abilities necessary to interact with patients, physicians, and other hospital associates.
