About This Position

Alternatives For Girls' Housing Stability team is seeking a Counselor to add to the Dr. Maya Angelou Village (DMAV). DMAV is a permanent supportive housing facility located in Detroit, equipped with resources and amenities including counseling services.

Job Summary: The Counselor supports AFG’s mission and the goal to deliver intensive therapeutic counseling for individuals, families, and groups as requested by the residents at the Dr. Maya Angelou Village (DMAV) apartments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Flexible schedule to screen, clinically assess, and process referrals for participant intake.

• Assess participants' clinical/psychosocial needs and develop/write individual treatment plans.

• Maintain a caseload of at least 25 participants.

•Provide crisis intervention and referrals for additional/specialty mental health services.

• Provide individual, family, and group counseling per participants’ needs.

• Facilitate therapeutic groups that meet the specific needs of program participants if needed.

• Participate in case conferences as requested to moderate and ensure participant progress.

• Maintain accurate and complete treatment files to document dates and services provided.

• Complete HMIS documentation as needed.

• Prepare monthly reports that document clinical intervention with program participants. Complete progress evaluations, discharge summaries, and letters to referral sources as needed.

Demonstrated Abilities:

• Demonstrates strong communication and teamwork skills to support seamless case coordination.

• Good decision-making, conflict-resolution, and practical listening skills.

• Good communication skills, diplomacy, and tact.

• Ability to work autonomously while providing services to enhance participant mental health.

• Ability to set priorities, take initiative, and meet deadlines.

• Ability to handle crises, cope with job stress, and maintain confidentiality.

• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, nights, and weekends.

Acquired Knowledge:

• A master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or human behavioral science is required.

• At a minimum, a State of Michigan Limited License in clinical work is required to practice.

• At least 3 years of experience working with youth and adults who have experienced trauma, including that from homelessness, dating/domestic violence, human trafficking, or are involved in high-risk activities, such as gangs, violence, drugs, sexual activity, etc., is preferred.

• A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience is strongly preferred.

• Familiarity with the Detroit community and its resources is strongly preferred.

• Must possess a current driver’s license, good driving record, and reliable transportation.
