CITY OF CRESCENT CITY IS LOOKING FOR A MECHANIC I/II
HOURLY RATE: $19.36 - $28.60 / Non-Exempt
Accepting Applications through May 30, 2025
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, services, maintains and makes mechanical repairs to vehicles and equipment; performs metal fabrication, welding and cutting; maintains accurate records of vehiclle and equipment maintenance; performs general housekeeping duties; performs related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Mechanic I-
- Inspects vehicles and equipment to indentify necessary cleaning, repairs and maintenance
- Performs periodic maintenance work, includingminor engine tune-ups, lubrication, changing oil, air and gas filters
- Assures proper tire air pressure and repairs/replaces tires
- Cleans exterior and interior of vehicles and equipment
- Operates steam cleaning equipment
- Operates welding equipment and performs cutting, welding and metal fabrication duties
- Performs minor repairs on vehicles and equipment in order to maintain their operational ability
- Performs general housekeeping duties in order to maintain the maintenance shop and related facilities in a clean and safe manner.
- Peforms other related work as require
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Basic mathematics skills in order to calculate operational data on vehicles and equipment
- Basic vehicle and equipment operations, maintenance and repair practices
- Mechanics hand tools and their applications
- Principles of gasoline engines and automotice electrical systems
- Safe housekeeping practices
- General safety practices
- Basic welding, metal cutting and metal fabrication
Ability to:
- Understand and follow both written and verbal instructions
- Work alone to complete assigned tasks and work with others when required
- Safetly operate, maintain and repair vehicles and equipment
- Maintain a clean and safe work place
- Lift and carry tools, equipment or materials up to 75 pounds
- Work in confined spaces
Other Requirements:
Possession of a basic set of hand tools suitable for automobile shop work.
SUPERVISION: This position works under the direct supervision of the Senior Fleet Mechanic. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a certified automotive or mechanic’s training program is desirable.
Experience: One year entry-level automotive repair or mechanic experience.
License:
Possession of a valid California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, or equivalent if a resident of another state. A Class B commercial license is desirable. Must have and maintain a license in compliance with City employee driving standards.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Inspects and troubleshoots vehicles and equipment to identify and determine necessary cleaning, repairs and maintenance
- Performs periodic preventive maintenance service work on vehicles and equipment including minor engine tune-ups, lubrication, changing oil, air and gas filters
- Adjusts and replaces necessary parts, including valves, pistons, main bearings, and assemblies
- Repairs cooling, fuel and exhaust systems;
- Repairs and overhauls brakes, electrical and ignition systems, clutches, transmissions, differentials and rear axle assemblies
- Tunes engines using standard testing equipment
- Assures proper tire air pressure and repairs/replaces tires
- Cleans exterior and interior of vehicles and equipment
- Operates steam cleaning equipment
Operates welding equipment and performs cutting, welding and metal fabrication duties
- Performs both minor and major repairs on vehicles and equipment in order to maintain their operational ability
- Maintains accurate records of repair and service work
- May make emergency repairs in the field
- Performs general housekeeping duties in order to maintain the maintenance shop and related facilities in a clean and safe manner.
- Performs other related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Standard practices, equipment and tools of the automotive mechanic trade;
- Mathematic skills in order to calculate operational data on vehicles and equipment;
- Vehicle and equipment operations, maintenance, and repair practices;
- Mechanics hand and power tools and their applications;
- Operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and automotive electrical systems;
- Operating principles of heavy construction vehicles and equipment, including hydraulic units and pumps;
- Various types of welding, metal cutting, and metal fabrication methods and equipment;
- Automotive diagnostic systems;
- Fundamentals of electronics;
- Safe housekeeping practices;
- Safe work practices.
Ability to:
- Make major mechanical repairs to a variety of vehicles and power driven and mechanical equipment;
- Demonstrate skill in the use of shop and mechanics tools;
- Operate both gas and electric welding equipment to cut, braze, and weld;
- Adopt available tools and parts to specific repair;
- Troubleshoot engine and mechanical problems;
- Understand and follow both written and verbal instructions;
Work alone to complete assigned tasks and work with others when required;
- Safely operate, maintain, and repair vehicles and equipment;
- Maintain a clean and safe work place;
- Lift and carry tools, equipment or materials up to 75 pounds;
- Prepare and maintain accurate vehicle and equipment maintenance records;
- Maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience:
A minimum of three to five years of journeyman level experience in automotive repair or mechanical equipment is required, including experience in diesel fuel systems.
License:
Possession of a valid California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, or equivalent if a resident of another state. A Class B commercial license is desirable. Must have and maintain a license in compliance with City employee driving standards.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND COMMUNICATION DEMANDS:
Essential duties require the following physical, mental, environmental and communication demands:
Physical:
Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, walking, standing, and lifting, up to 75 pounds; sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to operate motorized vehicles and equipment; sufficient manual dexterity to grasp and use hand and power tools and mechanical equipment, writing instruments and materials.
Mental:
Apply good judgment and practical knowledge to resolve routine and non-routine problems in the area of work assigned.
Environmental:
Work is performed in an automotive/maintenance shop environment and in related facilities, and includes driving vehicles between facilities; includes working in limited space in vehicle interiors, engine compartments, etc; may be subject to temperature variations and may be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, and/or loud noises.
Communication:
Vision — Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodations, to read operational manuals and written instructions; to have depth perception and to see and locate small mechanical details.
Hearing — Sufficient clarity of hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to hear motorized engines and equipment; to maintain communications in person, on the telephone, and by two-way radio.
Speech — Sufficient clarity of speech or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate effectively in a clear and concise manner with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
Writing — Sufficient writing skills to keep accurate, routine, written maintenance records.
