About the RoleThe Registered Nurse plays a critical role in delivering safe, evidence-based medical care to individuals in residential treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.
As an essential member of the multidisciplinary team, the RN provides clinical oversight, conducts assessments, administers medications, responds to medical needs, and supports the therapeutic milieu through trauma-informed care.
In facilities utilizing the AMAP (Approved Medication Assistive Personnel) model, the RN may serve in an instructional and supervisory capacity to ensure safe delegation, medication compliance, and regulatory adherence.
This role ensures that all nursing services are delivered in alignment with state regulations, professional nursing standards, Joint Commission expectations, and the organization’s commitment to high-quality, person-centered care.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesClinical Care & AssessmentConduct comprehensive nursing assessments and evaluate high-risk indicators.
Complete individualized nursing care plans upon admission.
Provide direct medical evaluation and intervention as needed.
Participate in discharge planning beginning at intake.
Monitor withdrawal symptoms (CIWA, COWS as applicable).
Respond to urgent and emergent medical situations.
Administer and manage medications accurately, including controlled substances.
Collaborate with pharmacy and prescribing providers to ensure accurate orders.
Reconcile and prepare Medication Administration Records (MARs) monthly.
Monitor for medication side effects or adverse reactions and intervene appropriately.
Ensure proper storage, security, and documentation of medications in accordance with Board of Pharmacy requirements.
For RNs accredited to teach the AMAP program:
Conduct AMAP training classes in accordance with state regulatory standards.
Supervise AMAP staff to ensure safe and compliant medication administration.
Provide ongoing competency validation and clinical oversight of AMAP personnel.
Consult with prescribing providers regarding delegated medication administration practices.
Prepare and review monthly MARs to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Provide health-related training and individualized medical guidance to unlicensed personnel (including LPNs, AMAPs, and Direct Support Professionals).
Ensure all delegated tasks remain within legal scope and facility policy.
Monitor quality of medication documentation and intervene when standards are not met.
Perform clinical supervision of LPNs and AMAP staff.
Participate actively in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings.
Contribute to treatment planning aligned with ASAM criteria and individualized care goals.
Serve as liaison with hospitals, outside providers, and families when coordinating medical care.
Support trauma-informed engagement and behavioral health best practices.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record.
Ensure compliance with state licensing regulations, Board of Nursing standards, and Joint Commission requirements.
Support internal audits, quality reviews, and accreditation readiness efforts.
Base clinical decisions on evidence-based practice and professional guidelines.
Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
Assist with crisis intervention and de-escalation in collaboration with clinical and RSS teams.
Respond to psychiatric or medical emergencies in accordance with facility protocols.
Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment (required).
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing (required).
Current CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days).
Eligible to obtain or maintain AMAP Instructor certification (if applicable by state).
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or advanced degree.
2+ years of experience in substance use disorder, detox, psychiatric, or behavioral health settings.
Experience supervising unlicensed assistive personnel.
Experience in trauma-informed and co-occurring disorder treatment environments.
Strong patient assessment and clinical judgment skills.
Competent in withdrawal management and acute symptom recognition.
High attention to detail in medication and documentation processes.
Ability to supervise and train AMAP and LPN staff effectively.
Clear delegation and accountability practices.
Collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
Working knowledge of state nurse practice acts.
Understanding of Board of Pharmacy requirements.
Commitment to Joint Commission readiness and documentation integrity.
Work Environment:
Indoor clinical setting within a residential treatment facility.
Physical Demands:
Standing, walking, lifting (<50 lbs with support), documentation tasks, medication preparation.
