POLYSOMNO TECH

BASIC FUNCTION:

The polysomnography technician will provide polysomnography services to patients, including routine basic recordings and complex and non-routine recordings such as CPAP, BIPAP, MSLT, and split-night recordings. The technician must be able to independently prepare patients, conduct all recordings, and collect all information pertinent to the interpretation of these tests.

JOB DUTIES:

1. Perform routine, complex, and non-routine polysomnography:

  1. Independently apply suitable electrodes and other recording devices to the patient (within an average of 60 minutes) and check recording performance.
  2. Perform pretest calibration and make necessary adjustments to the recording instrument
  3. Selects appropriate recording montage or montages necessary for the case under study. Obtains a high quality recording, recognizing artifacts and taking the steps to eliminate them.
  4. Describes in technical notes any clinical events pertinent to the study. Obtains the patient's cooperation to enhance test results.
  5. Abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical record, collects patient questionnaires and obtains additional information through questioning.
  6. Performs testing in the hospital setting.
  7. Instructs patients on Home sleep equipment
  8. Able to download and process overnight equipment
  9. Keeps equipment in proper working order, performs routine maintenance, detects equipment malfunction, makes minor repairs and reports problems to the department supervisor.
  10. Schedules maintenance and repairs of equipment. Reviews routine equipment maintenance logs.
  11. Ability to prepare and test two patients each night.

2. Demonstrates gradual and persistent improvement in performance quality.

3. Continues education by participating in conferences and technical meetings. Keeps sleep services current and progressive.

4. Demonstrates accurate scoring of tracings after appropriate education.

5. Performs clerical duties such as filing reports and tracings and logs patient’s studies.

6. Performs computer billing.

7. Maintains inventory control and initiates purchasing of lab supplies and equipment.

8. Takes part in marketing and growth of center.

9. Assumes responsibility for assigned area.

10. Participates in department staff meetings.

11. Responsible for checking emails and online learning assignments (Relias) on a regular basis.

12. All other duties assigned by Coordinator/Director/assistant manager/ lead technician[TLR1]

13. Follows laboratory safety regulations and procedures.

14. May be cross trained to be utilized within scope of practice within the Cardiopulmonary Department, Including, EEG, Respiratory Care, EKGs, Holter Monitors. Will be floated into areas in lieu of E.O, if department needs exists.

AGE-APPROPRIATE CARE:

Colleague has been instructed in providing customer service and on interacting with age groups as related to the department's general client population: including use of appropriate interventions, communication and skills to match the age and/or abilities of the patient/family.

MACHINES, TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED:

Must be knowledgeable in the use of all sleep-related equipment. Other equipment/devices as required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:

  1. Graduate of an accredited school for sleep medicine, or a respiratory care professional (registered or certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), or a graduate of an approved nursing program (RN or LPN) with current State licensure.
  2. BCLS certification through American Heart Association.
  3. ACLS preferred.
  4. Registry in polysomnography preferred.
  5. Must be computer literate to complete task(s) as required. Such as MediTech (Hospital Support Software), Halogen (performance appraisal system) Relias (education system), ability to retrieve e-mails, complete online enrollment for health insurance/benefits and any other programs as assigned.
  6. Completion of Basic ECG Interpretation class with one year.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Manual dexterity to apply electrodes.
  2. Ability to bend over frequently and move into uncomfortable positions.
  3. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  4. Ability to walk from one section of the hospital to another.
  5. Ability to lift and move equipment and assist patients with transfers/mobility
  6. Good hearing and speaking for the communication responsibilities associated with the position.
