Position Summary
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is an exciting and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. The Observatory operates a variety of radio telescopes that span the globe, including the Green Bank Telescope at the Green Bank Observatory (GBO) in West Virginia. Our telescopes are among the most advanced in the world, allowing astronomers to explore the universe in unprecedented detail.
The GBO has an opportunity for an Engineering Summer Internship with the Electronics Division located in Green Bank, WV. The Electronics Division is responsible for the operations, design, and maintenance of many of the GBT’s electronics systems. The intern will work five 8-hour days per week for a duration of up to 10 weeks.
What You Will be Doing:
Some of the typical engineering activities and tasks include:
- Electrical and/or mechanical design, electronic assembly, and testing for systems in use and under development.
- Collection, analysis and presentation of system and/or test data.
- Interfacing with technicians, craftsman, scientists, and engineers of various disciplines to solve problems.
- Developing work instructions & writing reports
Work Environment
Assignment will take place in an indoor lab setting as well as outdoors on the instrument. Appropriate safety training and equipment will be provided.
Who You Are:
- You are currently enrolled undergraduate student in a bachelor’s degree program in electrical engineering degree or closely related field.
- You have completed at least two semesters and have at least one semester remaining before graduation.
- You have experience doing hands-on engineering work.
- You have completed 30 semester hours of college credit, including some courses within engineering.
- You have a current cumulative GPA of at least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Physical Demands
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, unassisted; climb ladder and stairs, and working at heights above 100 feet.
Safety Sensitive
The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen. Failure to pass the screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.
Total Rewards:
The starting hourly rate of this position is $20.00 per hour.
