GENERAL FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Aquatics & Youth Sports Director, and in accordance with the policies of the Stevens Point Area YMCA, this position is responsible for assisting with all aspects and functions of the Aquatics Department. This includes overseeing and coordinating the swim lessons program, teaching Red Cross courses, pool supervision, providing lifeguard coverage for pool operations and special events, and building positive relationships with staff and members through effective listening and communication, to ensure a safe and positive environment.
Requirements:QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a highly motivated person with a mature and personable character. The Aquatics Coordinator must be at least eighteen years old.
Education/Training/Certifications:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred.
- Lifeguard Training Instructor Certification is required, but if not currently certified, can be obtained within a reasonable time.
Technical Knowledge/Skills/Experience:
- Extensive background in Aquatics
- Lifeguard experience
- Teaching experience, preferably in Aquatics
- Supervisory experience
- Administrative skills
- Proficiency in computer operations, including Outlook, Word and Excel
Proficiencies and Professionalism:
- Language Skills -- Ability to:
Effectively present information and respond to inquiries at an individual or group level.
Communicate effectively with staff, members, participants, parents, volunteers.
- Mathematical Skills -- Ability to:
Process timesheets, including work hour calculations.
Calculate wage increase recommendations.
- Cognitive Skills -- Ability to:
Solve practical problems based on established guidelines.
Interpret instructions in variety of written or oral formats.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Position requires employee to observe/evaluate facility and groups of participants/staff by sight and sound. Must be able to easily move through all program areas and effectively communicate and actively interact with participants. Must be able to lift, carry and load equipment, furnishings, and program supplies up to 50 pounds. Must be able to routinely demonstrate proper swimming, lifeguarding, and CPR techniques to members and staff and able to tolerate chlorine and temperatures up to 90 degrees with high humidity.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Proactively communicate with facility users and program participants on a regular basis. Do this by actively seeking out member concerns, questions, and suggestions, and responding to member needs to the best of your ability. Follow up with each person that has a concern, question, or suggestion in a timely fashion.
- Oversee all aspects and functions of the Swim Lessons Program.
- Oversee Aquatics facility safety, maintenance, and supervision.
- Ensure the highest quality customer service possible in collaboration with the Aquatics Director.
- Ensure the safety of the facility patrons and staff. Enforce all of the facility rules, policies, and regulations consistently and correctly and report any unsafe conditions to the Aquatics Director.
- Provide administrative, marketing, and clerical assistance for all Aquatics programs and operations.
- Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate Aquatics staff under the direction of the Aquatics Director.
- Assist with staff supervision, scheduling, communication, and facilitating meetings and training.
- Serve as a lifeguard, swim lessons instructor, and department supervisor primarily on weekends and during times agreed upon mutually with the Aquatics Director.
- Be on deck prepared to enter the water during all assigned scheduled swim lessons, and serve as a department supervisor, lifeguard, and swim lessons instructor during times agreed upon mutually with the Aquatics Director.
- Perform facility maintenance tasks to ensure the Aquatics department meets and exceeds cleanliness standards.
- Maintain records and reports including but not limited to: patron usage, water chemical readings, incident/accident reports, employee files, swim lesson data base and pool rentals.
- Take inventory of and coordinate the ordering of first aid and Aquatics program supplies.
- Adhere to all YMCA policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
