Director - Emergency Department (ED)

Job Summary

Provides leadership, direction, and administration of all aspects of clinical activities to ensure accomplishments of objectives; Directs and supervises the facility operations, financial affairs, nursing, and patient care services; Manages effective operations for a specified unit(s), with 24 hour responsibility for all clinical, human resource and business functions; Participates in advancing the leadership agenda for the department, and contributes to the advancement of professional nursing.

Physical Requirements

Working Conditions

Primarily Works in a well-lighted and air-conditioned environment with period of heavy workload and stress. This role may include working in less-than-ideal home conditions, which can include exposure to extreme temperatures and environments that may not meet typical cleanliness standards such as clutter, unkept surfaces, and homes with pets. Works in various conditions.

Performance: Essential Functions

Decision Making: Ability to make decisions and takes appropriate action based on the information they have. Recognizes own limitations and consults with the supervisor, manager, or team member when appropriate.

Time Management: Works efficiently and manages duties to ensure that tasks are completed with accuracy and within the scheduled shift or reasonable amount of time.

Quality & Quantity: Demonstrates accurate, knowledge and skill to carry out job duties. Follows departmental work policies and procedures. Speed and consistency of output, and time utilization of job duties.

Computer Knowledge & Electronic Equipment Use: Demonstrates ability to consistently utilize electronic equipment and online computer programs to perform job duties, including electronic documentation, and order entry.

Resource Utilization: Consistently utilizes and maintains supplies and equipment to minimize lost charges and unnecessary equipment repair-replacement.

Confidentiality: Adheres to established policies on privacy and security requirements for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as applicable by Shannon Policy.

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions

  • Monitor data to ensure appropriate patient care standards are met; Identify trends and implement interventions to achieve the clinical outcomes established for the unit; Identifies problems related to clinical practice or operating procedures and develops appropriate plan of correction; Identify opportunities to improve patient care processes.
  • Develops unit budget in accordance with the established financial and operating assumptions. Monitors budget performance and provides detailed information and action plans for variances on MOR and SRA. Ensures that all regulatory and accreditation standards are met and organizational policies and procedures. Directs Unit based QA and QI activities; participates in organization wide quality assurance and improvement activates, coordinates intra and inter departmental operations in a manner that promotes quality improvement and cooperation. Institutes methods for measuring and managing patient, staff, and physician satisfaction to meet targeted goals. Immediately intervenes on complaints after notification of such. Encourages team building and employee participation in operational activities. Completes assignments and projects as assigned in a thorough and timely manner. Participates on Hospital committees and contributes to new organizational initiatives.
  • Establish efficient position control for the department, interviews and hires appropriate number and type of staff to maintain effective/ efficient department operations; provides support for assimilating new staff into the department, ensures adequate training and develop to perform role proficiently; supervises performance of department staff on a day-to-day basis, and provides ongoing feedback to employees, completes all performance evaluations in an objective and timely manner, acknowledges exceptional performance and provides corrective actions according to HR policy to immediately address problematic performance issues; collaborates with HR, completes personnel actions (promotions, transfers, disciplinary actions, merit increases, and terminations, etc.) accurately and timely and in accordance with HR policies and procedures; prepares/approves a monthly master schedule and makes decisions regarding day-to-day staffing in a manner that provides appropriate staffing levels within targeted budget and productivity standards.
  • Directs unit-based quality assurance and improvement activities; Participates in organization-wide quality assurance and improvement activities; Coordinates intra- and inter-departmental operations in a manner that promotes quality improvement and cooperation; Institutes methods for measuring and managing patient, staff, and physician satisfaction to meet targeted goals; Immediately intervenes on complaints after notification of such; Introduces and demonstrates new techniques, new equipment and research findings to the staff; Ensures that the department is represented in conferences and hospital committees; Sees that reports are submitted on a timely basis.
  • Establishes and maintains safety, infection and environmental control policies and procedures for the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required
    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
    • Completion of an accredited Nursing program
  • Preferred
    • Associate’s degree in Nursing
    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing

Experience:

  • Required
    • Two years of experience in Nursing
  • Preferred
    • Two years of experience in a Healthcare/Medical Management position
    • Two years of experience as a Charge Nurse

Certification/Licensure:

  • Required
    • Registered Nurse (RN), with authorization to practice in the State of Texas
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
      • Must obtain within ninety (90) days of start date
    • SAFE Approach Level III Certification
      • Must obtain within six (6) months of start date
  • Preferred
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification
    • Certification in Nursing Specialty Area by an organization recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing
