Department Overview
The OHSU Research Integrity Office (ORIO) is charged with protecting and assuring compliance under the laws that govern the rights and welfare of human and animal subjects, and the oversight of basic and applied scientific research at OHSU. The OHSU Conflict of Interest (CoI) office, part of ORIO, ensures institutional compliance with federal regulations required for review of conflict of interest in research. https://www.ohsu.edu/research-integrity/conflict-interest-coi
This position will work primarily within and across the Conflict of Interest (CoI) program. This position serves as a liaison and subject matter expert between CoI and other research integrity programs and OHSU departments as needed, to assure smooth and coordinated review processes for potential research-related conflicts of interest and electronic Conflict of Interest disclosures. This position also works with research integrity leadership and research oversight committees as assigned to continually monitor and provide input to enhance the coordinated review processes.
Function/Duties of PositionIndependent review and analysis
- Using sound judgment, as well as analytical, organizational, and time management skills, perform independent, accurate and timely management of submissions/transactions/inquiries.
- Use of advanced knowledge of federal, state, local, and OHSU statutes, regulations, guidance, policies, procedures, and systems to:
- Provide advanced professional analysis and serve as resource for other staff and the OHSU community.
- Independently and accurately review, analyze, and provide final approval/determination/resolution on submissions and inquiries in accordance with all applicable requirements and processes.
- Serve as an advanced regulatory resource for research oversight committees, and, as assigned, serve as a standing member on the official roster (as registered with the federal government) of the pertinent research oversight committees.
- Provide advanced professional guidance to research integrity team members, committee members, and the OHSU community.
Training, communication, and advisory services
- Work with leadership to identify, develop, and implement continuous training and communication to the OHSU research community, research oversight committee members, and research integrity staff to continuously improve research integrity and related areas at OHSU.
- Serve as a subject matter expert/consultant to all areas and all levels of the OHSU community.
Policies and procedures
- Provide technical and subject matter input on the development of policies and SOPs to research integrity leadership.
- Identify deficiencies and advise on how to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements in an efficient manner.
- Implement new policies and procedural changes to affected individuals (staff, research community, committee members, etc.).
Continuous Quality Improvement
- Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives for research integrity operations in partnership with research integrity leadership.
- Work with research integrity leadership, advisory councils, other research integrity units, the OHSU community, and other appropriate OHSU units in development and enhancement of research integrity at OHSU.
- Identify weaknesses and deficiencies, and provide input to research integrity leadership on how to enhance the quality and efficiency of the work performed.
Technology liaison
- Provides functional expertise to ITG on implementation and enhancement of electronic systems that support research integrity.
- Assist in the development and improvement of workflows and reporting.
- Assist ITG in providing quality assurance and testing on technology issues and projects.
Other duties as assigned
- Other special projects, as determined by research integrity leadership.
Required Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Four years of related experience.
- For internal applicants only: 8 years of relevant experience and previously demonstrated ability to consistently meet the performance standards will be considered in lieu of the Bachelor’s degree requirement.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge in federal and state laws, regulations, and guidance relating to conflict of interest.
- Ability to read and comprehend complex scientific procedures in order to provide thorough, accurate, and self-sufficient review.
- Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment.
- Effective organizational abilities, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to operate and communicate effectively while meeting multiple deadlines and completing projects simultaneously.
- Ability to interact in a positive, productive manner with research faculty and staff, leadership, and other staff (demonstrating sensitivity, tact, and professionalism).
- Advanced proficiency with electronic systems and software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree or additional emphasis/training/education in bioethics, health, law, executive public administration or a related scientific discipline.
- Research compliance experience.
- Advanced proficiency with OHSU electronic databases for tracking compliance submissions.
- Demonstrated leadership and formal/informal influence skills.
- Advanced knowledge in federal and state laws, regulations, and guidance relating to research and related areas.
Additional Details
This position requires the ability to work remotely. Occasional travel to the OHSU Portland campus may be required.
