JOB SUMMARY
Working under the Softball Director, Riverview Umpires will officiate softball games for Elkhart's recreational leagues. These leagues range from recreational co-ed leagues to competitive men's leagues.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Call balls and strikes for each plate appearance
• Make base running calls
• Keep track of the score
• Ensure that the game pace is appropriate to finish within the hour time limit
• Be up to date on current rule changes
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operate the scoreboard after each half inning
• Make sure players are behaving themselves
• Alert the Softball Director of field quality concerns
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Must be at least 16 years old with reliable transportation to and from work.
• Background in softball, previous umpiring preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Must know the rules of slow pitch softball
• Have the ability to adjust to different home run rules
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
• Must be able to stand for at least one hour at a time
WORKING CONDITIONS
• An umpire must expect to be working outside for most of their job. Softball seasons starts in April and ends in October. During that period of time the weather can be relatively cold in April and October and very hot during the summer months. It's important to evaluate the weather each day and dress appropriately.
POST OFFER TESTING REQUIRED
• The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore, successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
• Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
