The TeamFounded on the premise that individual student learning journeys are the most important component of the college application process, the Mount Vernon College Counseling team works closely with Upper School students, beginning in Grade 9, to customize the college search, and ultimately craft for colleges and universities a compelling account of a student’s successes, passions, and priorities up to this point in their career. This particular position may include supporting some students who are primarily online.
The RoleThe Associate Director of College Counseling at The Mount Vernon School will round out a team of five college counselors who support a graduating class of roughly 130 students. The Associate Director of College Counseling will work closely under the direction of the Executive Director of Graduate and Student Success, ultimately reporting to the Head of Upper School. This dynamic candidate will collaborate to provide comprehensive guidance through the college admission process and assist with the experiential learning mission of the Upper School. This particular position may include supporting some students who are primarily online.
Responsibilities- Maintain a caseload of between 30-40 students in both Grades 11 and Grade 12
- Collaborate with team members to lead small-group counseling sessions with students in Grades 9 and 10
- Collaborate with current team members to develop and implement thoughtful and effective college counseling strategies and innovative programming in the context of Mount Vernon
- Stay abreast of current admissions and counseling trends through reading and research
- Work to advance the strategic vision and mission of Mount Vernon, as outlined in our strategic plan
- Demonstrate a commitment to inclusion and diversity in alignment with Mount Vernon’s IDEA statement
- Maintain membership in professional associations and actively build a professional network
- Participate in tours of universities and partner with Mount Vernon’s admission team for school tours and events
- Execute programming such as a Graduation, Senior Retreat, College Panel Night, Financial Aid Night, and more
- Support students via essay brainstorming and review, letters of recommendation, and resume crafting
- Work to support students in respect to internships, portfolios, and other enrichment endeavors
- Assist with standardized testing, such as the administration of the PSAT and AP exams
- Teaching college writing focused course for juniors
- Cultivate relationships via coaching, teaching, advising, or study hall responsibilities outside of college counseling
- Ability to cultivate respectful and affirming environments

- A track record of giving high-quality, Responsive Feedback
- Proficiency in Google Suite & Mac/Apple OS
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- 5+ years of experience as a high school college counselor or in holistic college admissions
- Prior experience supporting or recruiting international students is a plus (preferred)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, rigorous school setting
- A bias toward collaboration, with the ability to work independently
