About This Position

This role requires availability during weekends, holidays, and morning shifts. This is a full-time position, with schedules based on business needs. Flexibility with scheduling is essential to support hotel operations and ensure consistent coverage.


JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall maintenance, safety, and operational efficiency of the Hampton Inn’s physical plant, building systems, and equipment. This role ensures the property is maintained in compliance with Hilton/Hampton brand standards, local regulations, and company expectations to support a safe, comfortable, and high-quality guest experience. The Chief Engineer performs hands-on maintenance work, coordinates vendor/contractor services, and executes preventive maintenance programs. This position does not directly supervise staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform hands-on maintenance and repairs for guestrooms, public areas, and back-of-house (e.g., PTAC/HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, door hardware, drywall/paint, flooring, minor carpentry).
  • Perform daily property walks to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and appearance issues; complete repairs to keep the hotel in Hampton brand condition.
  • Respond promptly to guest and staff maintenance requests; troubleshoot issues and communicate status/ETA to the Front Desk and Housekeeping.
  • Prioritize repairs for out-of-order/out-of-service rooms and coordinate with Housekeeping to return rooms to inventory quickly.
  • Support compliance with OSHA, fire/life safety requirements, and applicable local/state regulations; maintain a safe work environment and correct hazards promptly.
  • Respond to urgent facility issues (e.g., leaks, PTAC failures, power interruptions) and participate in an on-call rotation as assigned.
  • Perform assigned life-safety checks (e.g., emergency lighting/exit signs, fire extinguisher visual checks) and coordinate required inspections and repairs for fire alarm/sprinkler systems through approved vendors.
  • Follow all safety practices and participate in required safety meetings and training; immediately report hazards, incidents, and near-misses.
  • Coordinate outside contractors and service providers (e.g., HVAC, elevator, fire/life safety, pest control, kitchen hood, pool service if applicable), including scheduling, access, and follow-up.
  • Request and compare quotes as needed; communicate recommendations to the General Manager and assist with tracking approvals and invoices.
  • Verify contractor work quality and completion; maintain service records and report recurring issues or warranty concerns to management.
  • Support the General Manager with maintenance purchasing, tracking of expenses, and recommendations for repairs and capital needs.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of parts, tools, and supplies; order replacements as needed and within authorized limits.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance, inspection, and repair records (work orders, vendor reports, warranties) to support brand standards, audits, and regulatory compliance.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Supports other departments as needed to support overall guest satisfaction and hotel operations.
  • Communicates effectively with the Front Desk and Housekeeping regarding room status, maintenance priorities, and safety concerns.
  • Maintains accurate documentation for work performed, vendor visits, inspections, and parts used.
  • Participates in meetings and training sessions as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

  • Provides leadership and direction to direct reports, including recruitment, training, and performance management.
  • Sets clear expectations, goals, and priorities for team members and monitor their progress towards achieving them.
  • Conducts regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports to provide feedback, support their professional development, and address any performance issues.
  • Delegates tasks and responsibilities effectively, balancing workload and ensuring optimal utilization of team resources.
  • Fosters a collaborative and inclusive team environment, encouraging open communication, idea sharing, and teamwork.
  • Mentors and coach team members to enhance their skills, knowledge, and career growth within the company.
  • Leads by example, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the organization's values and culture.
  • Handles escalated issues or conflicts within the team, providing guidance and facilitating resolution in a timely and effective manner.
  • Collaborates with other departmental managers and stakeholders to ensure alignment of Talent Operations initiatives with broader organizational goals and objectives.
  • Prepares performance evaluation documentation; reviews and conducts performance evaluation meetings.
  • Reviews and approves associate’s timecards and manages time off requests.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school certification in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum three years of maintenance or engineering experience, preferably in hospitality, hotels, or a similar commercial environment
  • OSHA 30 General Industry Certification preferred (or ability to obtain within three months of hire)
  • EPA 608 certification preferred
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred (e.g., overseeing maintenance staff or contractors)
  • Demonstrated experience with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general building systems maintenance and repair
  • Experience implementing and managing a preventive maintenance program
  • Familiarity with hotel brand standards and property inspections preferred
  • Experience managing vendors, service contracts, and outside contractors
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, fire/life safety systems, and building codes
  • Experience with maintenance tracking systems or work order software preferred
  • Ability to manage department budgets, expenses, and capital improvement projects preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC/PTAC, drywall/painting, and general building maintenance.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to prioritize and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Ability to read, write, listen, and communicate effectively in English; Spanish fluency a plus.
  • Customer-service mindset with the ability to interact professionally with guests and team members.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to use maintenance tracking tools, email, and basic computer functions.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and being on-call for emergencies as required.

  • Frequent standing, walking, stair climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and working in tight spaces.
  • Regular use of hands and arms to handle tools, operate equipment, and perform repairs.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs; occasional heavier lifting with assistance or equipment.
  • Must be able to reach overhead and work in confined spaces (e.g. mechanical rooms, crawl spaces)
  • Ability to use ladders or lifts and work at heights in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Requires visual acuity to inspect equipment, read gauges, blueprints, and technical documents.
  • Ability to hear and respond to alarms, equipment sounds, and guest/staff communications.
  • Must be able to operate standard maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, outdoor weather conditions, and mechanical/electrical hazards.
  • May be required to respond to urgent/emergency situations (e.g., leaks, power issues) promptly.
