Adjunct Instructor, Group Counseling
University of Pittsburgh, Department of Counseling and Behavioral Health, is seeking a part-time adjunct instructor to assist with Group Counseling CACREP Standards require Counseling students to participate in 10 hours of small-group experience as group members The Experiential Group Leader facilitates these live group counseling sessions, guiding the process to ensure educational, developmental, and interpersonal learning outcomes This role involves managing group dynamics, maintaining emotional safety, and providing real-time clinical feedback while modeling effective group facilitation.
Key Responsibilities:
• Facilitate a pre-group meeting to orient participants and establish expectations.
• Prepare for each group session, including developing an agenda, setting goals, and reviewing prior group progress.
• Establish group norms and ground rules that promote safety, respect, and engagement.
• Model therapeutic facilitation skills and demonstrate the interpersonal dimensions of effective counseling.
• Teach members how to recognize, address, and work through conflict in constructive and meaningful ways.
• Address challenges directly and professionally, modeling assertiveness and self-awareness.
• Support students’ willingness to take interpersonal risks, and help them translate these experiences into their daily lives.
• Identify and explore common group themes, emphasizing universality and linking individual experiences to broader group processes.
• Help members summarize and reflect on personal changes, drawing connections across members to enhance collective insight.
• Assist participants in developing a conceptual framework that supports integration and retention of what they learn in the group experience.
• Document each group session.
• Provide educational documentation or summary materials to members at the conclusion of the experiential group.
• Consult as needed with other experiential group leaders and the course instructor to maintain consistency and address emerging issues.
Qualifications:
- Professional Mental Health Counselor
- MS Degree in Counseling
- Certification
- Licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Pennsylvania
- Minimum of three years of professional counseling experience
