About the Role:
The Maintenance Mechanic A is an entry-level technician responsible for assisting with the maintenance, repair, and preventive service of heavy-duty diesel fleet equipment, including semi-trucks, dry van trailers, roll-off trucks with sliding tarp systems, forklifts, and refuse vehicles. This role supports the safe and efficient operation of all fleet equipment while learning to troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine systems under the guidance of senior technicians. The Maintenance Mechanic A contributes to maximizing fleet reliability and minimizing downtime in a commercial operating environment
Responsibilities:

- Assist in performing routine preventive maintenance and inspections on fleet equipment.
- Perform basic mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical repairs under supervision.
- Operate hand and power tools, forklifts, and other equipment safely.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with OSHA and company standards.
- Follow established maintenance procedures and work orders accurately.
- Assist senior technicians with troubleshooting and component replacements.
- Perform other maintenance-related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
- Basic understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, brakes, and electrical components.
- Ability to follow instructions, read work orders, and use basic diagnostic tools.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in physically demanding shop conditions.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
- Basic diesel or heavy equipment maintenance training.
- Exposure to commercial fleet equipment (semi-trucks, trailers, forklifts, etc.).
- Familiarity with OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards.
- Strong interest in developing a long-term career in fleet maintenance.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Normal work environment is a recycling plant, with exposure to all weather conditions, dirt, high levels of noise, smells/odors and at times exposure to dangerous and/or toxic substances requiring necessary precautions, including PPE.

- Required to use motor coordination with arms, hands, fingers, and legs.
- Required to engage in physical activity that includes pushing, pulling, bending, and lifting objects more than 80 pounds.
- Required to work from ladders or raised platforms.

- Will be exposed to a physical environment, which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements most of the workday.
- Normal setting for this job is material recycle facilities, repair/maintenance facility, outdoors or other facilities.
