About This Position

Position Title: Utility Maintenance Technician

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs activities in the operation and maintenance of the water and irrigation distribution systems, wastewater collection system and maintenance of the water, wastewater and irrigation facilities.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Install, repair, replace and maintain the following with proper tools and equipment: Water meters, backflow prevention devices, air release valves, valves, fire hydrants, automated flushing devices, motors, pumps, gauges, and related equipment.
  • Performs drive-by meter reading and physical re-reads as needed.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, testing, maintenance activities, etc.
  • Responds to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure losses, etc. and explains findings to supervisor.
  • Performs routing inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Participate on a weekly “on-call” rotation and be available and within 45 minutes from site as needed.
  • Performs underground utility locates in accordance with Sunshine One Call standards.
  • Operates a variety of power and maintenance equipment.
  • General upkeep of: plant facilities, pump stations, buildings and vehicles.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Monitor, inspect, and report on work progress to supervisor Abides by all regulations, polices, work procedures and instructions.
  • Attends safety training. Follows all safety rules and makes use of appropriate safety equipment.
  • Participates and attends staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must be reachable 24/7 for emergencies.

EUIPMENT & TOOLS USED: Experience working with the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and systems typical to a water treatment facility. Motorized equipment and vehicles, including utility truck, golf cart, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, detection devices, meter reading equipment, backflow testing unit.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The position frequently requires exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, dirt, toxic gasses, heat, vibration, noise and biting insects and snakes. Employee will be working 90% indoors and 60% outdoors.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS: A High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Two years of progressive experience maintaining a water treatment facility and/or water distribution system. Learned knowledge to perform a variety of repair, maintenance, and servicing skills. Valid driver’s license with clean driving record. A valid Florida Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification is strongly preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Indoors and Outdoors. Regular exposure to all weather conditions. May be exposed to uncomfortable or distracting sounds or noise levels on sites. Position requires considerable physical exertion, mobility and ability to lift and carry for extended periods of time. When working on site, required to wear safety equipment. General office environment; no special requirements or hazards.
