Biology Instructor (Full-time) at John A. Logan College – Carterville, Illinois
About This Position
John A. Logan College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Biology Instructor position within the Department of Life and Physical Science. Situated in southern Illinois, John A. Logan College is a distinguished community institution dedicated to fostering educational excellence and meaningful engagement within the community.
We are seeking a passionate educator who prioritizes student success and embraces the mission of accessible, high-quality education. The instructor will be required to teach a range of biology courses, including general biology and microbiology. The individual should expect to engage in curriculum development, assessment, and innovative teaching strategies that support diverse learners.
Education & Experience Requirements
Education Required:
- A master’s degree in biology or a related field.
Experience Required:
- The ability to communicate effectively and have basic computer literacy.
Education Preferred:
Either:
- A master’s degree or higher in microbiology.
- A master’s degree or higher in biology with at least 18 graduate hours of coursework in microbiology or a closely related field.
Experience Preferred:
- Experience in post-secondary teaching, particularly at a community college.
- Experience in teaching in multiple instructional modalities (e.g., online, hybrid, hyflex).
- Experience in curriculum development.
Essential Functions & Position Duties
- Foster and promote a collegial atmosphere, prioritizing student learning and success.
- Develop new courses that cater to the needs of the diverse student population and adapt to the evolving educational landscape.
- Fulfill contractual obligations covering the academic year, consisting of fall and spring semesters.
- Teach a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester and hold eight office hours per week for student consultation during fall and spring semesters. Additional teaching opportunities with compensation may be available in the summer semester.
- Be available to teach classes during the day, evenings, and/or weekends as per the schedule of classes.
- Full-time faculty members are provided with private offices and have access to excellent support services.

Non-Essential Functions of the Position
• Other duties as assigned. Duties must be performed on the John A. Logan College campus or designated location.
Hours: varied
Salary: The assigned faculty hiring committee shall determine the initial placement on the salary scale, using guidelines and a rubric provided in Administrative Procedure 502A. The 2026-2027 Salary Schedule can be found here: APPENDIX B-3 2026-2027 Salary Schedule
