About This Position

Supervisor Nursing

  • JOB SUMMARY
    • Plan, direct, or coordinate the daily patient/resident care activities in the clinical environment. The Nurse Supervisor is accountable for the delivery of nursing and patient/resident care services. Acts as the highest-ranking on-site leader in the absence of other administrative/clinical leader for the service/location..The position reports to the Director of Nursing of the site. The Nurse Supervisor will foster the mission and core values of the GSRN in their daily practice.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • SUPERVISOR SKILLS

      • Oversees site operations; strives to achieve organizational and departmental goals and objectives in the area of responsibility.
      • Acts as a clinical and administrative resource while on duty.
      • Participates in leading nursing staff including participation in hiring, participates in transitioning and encouraging professional development of each member within their scope of practice.
      • Supports and assists in scheduling the nursing staffing requirements based upon acuity, specialty, volumes including budgeted NHPPD.
      • Facilitates staff growth and development.
      • Communicates through effective written and verbal communication skills.
      • Assists in implementing plans and strategies to maximize delivery of safe patient/resident care.
      • Assists in leading actions to achieve departmental goals and objectives in area of responsibility.
      • Routinely communicates GSRN, site specific information to associates.
    • FACILITATES PATIENT/RESIDENT CARE

      • Acts as a clinical resource to multidisciplinary team.
      • Participates in development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures utilizing evidence-based practice to standardize care.
    • CONTRIBUTES TOWARDS ACHIEVING DEPARTMENTAL STRATEGIC GOALS

      • Gathers pertinent business, financial, service, and operations information in coordination with other nursing leaders.
      • Assists with identifying trends.
      • Collaborate with Nursing Leadership to review and implement best practices for the unit, and evaluate outcomes.
    • CONTRIBUTES AND WORKS TOWARDS FINANCIAL OBJECTIVES

      • Utilizes NHPPD and Acuity as a guide to assign staff to meet the needs of patients/residents.
      • Assist staff in obtaining supplies, equipment, medication, and transport services for patients/residents as needed to assist in controlling expenses.
      • Identifying and providing input to Nursing Leaders on work methods that reduce the cost and/or time required to deliver patient/resident care.
      • Exercises fiscal responsibility for expenditures and understands trends and variances in collaboration with Nurse Managers.
    • DELIVERS QUALITY CARE

      • Ensures competency-based care is provided through ongoing supervision and evaluation of staff.
      • Recognizes and responds to actual or potential events to ensure patient/resident safety.
      • Recommends systems improvements.
      • Demonstrates evidence-based decision making when addressing practice changes.
      • Assisting the Nurse Managers and Directors in effective communication among team members.
      • Providing handoff clinical report at the end of each shift.
      • Analyzes, reviews and provides feedback for event reporting during the shift.
      • Assists with orienting and evaluating the competency of agency, float, and/or per diem associates or delegating the responsibility to an appropriate individual.
    • DEVELOPS AND ENHANCES PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

      • Demonstrates a willingness to learn, grow and seek new and innovative opportunities.
      • Coordinates and/or provides learning experiences for professional development of staff.
      • Reviews professional publications.
      • Participates in professional societies/organizations.
    • PROMOTES HEALTHY WORKING ENVIRONMENT BY

      • Promotes Patient/Resident safety through a Just Culture in the workplace.
      • Complies with policies and procedures, rules and regulations governing environment of care and patient safety.
      • Applying quality improvement techniques to improve deficiencies.
      • Reviewing and revising policies, procedures and standards of care including appropriate references.
      • Demonstrating knowledge of responsibilities in an emergency situation and conducting drills (Code Blue, Fire, Internal Disaster, Bomb Threat, Priority Alert).
    • CONTRIBUTES TO TEAM EFFORT BY

      • Developing channels of communication which will enhance working relations and service delivery between nursing shifts, units and hospitals.
      • Establishing cooperative, collaborative relationships among disciplines and departments.
    • COMPLIES WITH FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL REQUIREMENTS

      • Ensures that all regulations, and standards are followed at the federal, state and local levels.
      • Maintaining compliance with professional, regulatory and governmental standards of care.
      • Maintains HIPAA Compliance.
    • DEMONSTRATES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BY

      • Remaining current in nursing and management knowledge and skills. Develops leadership skills in areas of responsibility.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.       • Education
        • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred
      • Work Experience
        • 2-4 years nursing experience required. Experience from related area of care preferred (Long Term Care, Rehabilitation, etc.)
        • 1-2 years Prior supervisory experience preferred
      • Licenses / Certifications
        • Must have an active registered nurse (RN) license in PA.
        • Basic Life Support / CPR, as a healthcare provider, per the American Heart Association required
          • For SPECIALTY (LTACH) and Rehabilitation Supervisors - ACLS required; must obtain ACLS within eighteen months of employment and then maintain certification throughout employment.
          • For PEDIATRICS (PEDS) - PALS certification preferred (must be acquired within first 6 months of employment).

        • Certification in Rehabilitation Nursing preferred (must be acquired within 2-3 years of hire into Supervisor role for rehabilitation hospital).
