INFECTION PREVENTIONIST - QUALITY SERVICES

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Infection Preventionist, under the Direction of the Unit Director for Infection Prevention and Control is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and continuous evaluation of all aspects of infection prevention, including surveillance, prevention and control. Will provide assistance/support to other aspects of the department as needed, including Patient Advocacy, Accreditation/Surveys, Performance Improvement/Assurance, Risk Management, and the Colleague Health program.

JOB DUTIES:

    1. Develops, Implements and maintains compliance with the Infection Prevention Surveillance Plan.
    2. Collaborates with local and state health agencies.
    3. Compiles/analyzes infection prevention surveillance data, related, but not limited, to VAP, Surgical Site Infections, Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections, all general outbreaks and positive culture reports for possible hospital acquired infections and reportables.
    4. Reports to appropriate committees as well as local, state and federal mandatory reporting agencies, including the CDC, CMS and NHSN, maintains appropriate records per ACHC guidelines and follows CMS Conditions of Participation and best practice standards of care.
    5. Complies with legal statutes pertaining to reportable communicable diseases.
    6. Serves as a consultant, liaison, and resource to all departments and providers on behalf of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee in the evaluation and development of strategies to help prevent and control infections.
    7. Assists the Colleague Health Nurse in providing appropriate colleague follow-up to blood/body fluid exposures, exposures to communicable disease, and colleague illness involving communicable disease.
    8. Keeps abreast of new and current legislation and trends in infection prevention to assist in assuring organizational compliance and best practice.
    9. Speaks with patients, families and visitors regarding questions, concerns, or comments they may have with respect to their hospitalization as it pertains to infectious treatment or prevention, pursues satisfactory resolution of concerns with appropriate department managers and administrative staff.
    10. Develops policies/procedures pertaining to infection prevention, including the annual Infection Control Plan; assists other departments in the development of infection prevention policies/procedures and facilitates their implementation.
    11. Participates on, and/or reports appropriate data to, the following committees: Quality Council, Infection Prevention Committee, Policy and Procedure Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, Safety Committee/ Emergency Management, Influenza Task Force, Value Analysis/Product Evaluation Committees, OR Committee, and the Medical Staff or Board of Directors as needed, other committees as assigned.
    12. Coordinates the development of educational programs and in-services pertinent to infection prevention.
    13. Provides Infection Prevention inservice for new hires during employee orientation.
    14. Initiates/coordinates performance improvement projects when improvement opportunities are identified via aggregate data and trends and/or requested by administration.
    15. Provides assistance/support to Patient Advocacy, Accreditations/Surveys, Performance Improvement, and Risk Management programs as needed.
    16. Utilizes discretion when dealing with confidential information.
    17. Assists with Core Measures, Quality, and Infection related data collection.
    18. Assist the Physician Chair of the Infection Prevention Committee, which meets quarterly, by preparing the necessary reports, power points, and other information as needed.
    19. Responsible for checking emails and online learning assignments on a regular basis.
    20. Participates and collaborates with professional organizations – North East Ohio Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (NEO-APIC), RED Network, Local and Regional Ebola Preparedness Planning, etc.
    21. Participates and collaborates in Quality Improvement activities and committees
    22. Participates in Community Service Activities as needed (County wide Influenza planning, Sheriff’s Department, Ohio Public Health Communication—OPHCS/CORS Alerts), Pandemic/Emergency Preparedness planning/committees.
    23. Reviews and advises regarding cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing equipment, instruments, and the environment.
    24. On Call Rotation
    25. Other duties as assigned

AGE-APPROPRIATE CARE:

Colleague has been instructed in providing customer service and on interacting with age groups as related to the department's general client population, including use of appropriate interventions, communication, and skills to match the age and/or abilities of the patient/family.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:

  1. Registered Nurse, graduate of an accredited nursing school with a current Ohio license; Bachelor’s degree/ Masters preferred.
  2. Minimum of three to five years experience in a health care setting.
  3. Basic knowledge of infection control surveillance and epidemiology.
  4. Experience/training in statistical analysis methodologies.
  5. Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred or complete Infection Prevention and Control training course within the first year, and complete CIC within 3 years.
  6. Must be computer-literate to complete task(s) as required. Such as Electronic Surveillance Software for Infection Control (Sentri 7, Hospital Electronic Medical Record (Cerner/Meditech), Halogen (performance appraisal system), Relias (education system), the ability to retrieve emails, complete on-line enrollment for health insurance/benefits, and any other programs as assigned.
  7. Participates in Annual and periodic NHSN/CDC Training

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to see clearly and hear normal speaking tones.
  2. Able to communicate verbally, interpersonally and over the telephone in a clear voice.
  3. Dexterity necessary to write legibly.
  4. Able to sit and stand for extended periods of time up to 7.5 hours per day.
