Geotechnical and Structural Design Engineer at Nicholson Construction Company – Canonsburg, Pennsylvania
About This Position
GEOTECHNICAL AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN ENGINEER
Nicholson Construction Company, headquartered in Canonsburg, PA, seeks a Geotechnical and Structural Design Engineer. This position is for a roving employee who will be working in unanticipated locations throughout the United States. The Geotechnical and Structural Design Engineer will be responsible for providing engineering and methods support to all Nicholson regional offices and major projects from preliminary design phase to execution phase.
Specific duties include:
(1) leading and supporting the geotechnical and structural design effort of earth retention, deep foundation and ground improvement systems from concept through final design. Fields of application of these systems include deep excavations, basements, tunnels, high-rise and industrial buildings, water management, energy production and transportation infrastructures;
(2) preparing budget, bid and execution level designs in compliance with local and international design standards;
(3) designing tasks including but not limited to: (a) soil-structure interaction analyses for lateral earth pressures, wall and deep foundation elements deflection, settlements, structural reinforcement, embedment depth and dewatering definition and calculations; and (b) coordination of the definition of ground improvement parameters;
(4) reviewing designs and drawings created by others;
(5) collaborating with construction teams to optimize execution strategies and resolve field issues related to wall and deep foundation elements construction, alignment, stability, and watertightness;
(6) advising on equipment selection and tooling based on soil and site conditions;
(7) developing construction method statements for diaphragm wall installation, including sequencing, installation and removal of temporary or permanent bracing systems, slurry management, joint detailing and mass excavation dewatering;
(8) interfacing with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with design intent and local or international design standards;
(9) evaluating test results for understanding, performance and errors;
(10) providing field support as needed, particularly on projects that have significant QA/QC and testing initiatives;
(11) supporting maintenance of Quality Manual;
(12) supporting development and participating in training initiatives;
(13) supporting Business Development in promoting Nicholson through participation in client meetings, developing technical papers, presenting technical seminars and actively participating in industry technical committees;
(14) staying updated with advancements in the industry technologies, materials, and construction techniques; and
(15) supporting research and development initiatives designed to gain competitive advantage; and promoting safety and quality in all design and jobsite activities.
Position requires relocation to work at various unanticipated locations throughout the U.S., as well as domestic travel up to 20% of the time for technical jobsite support and participation in industry conferences.
Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering plus 5 years of experience as a design engineer within the geotechnical, structural or heavy construction industries.
Must have experience with:
(1) construction methods for metro, basement, tunnel shaft and other large-scale infrastructure projects;
(2) design experience in the following Techniques: diaphragm walls, conventional earth retention systems (sheet piles, soldier beam and lagging walls, soil nail walls), soil and rock anchors and tie downs, deep foundations including CFA piles, micro piles, displacement piles, and drilled shafts, slope stabilization techniques, ground improvement techniques (jet grouting, permeation and compensation grouting, deep soil mixing), dewatering systems, and steel and concrete bracing systems;
(3) creating designs for above-listed Techniques, in accordance with design standards and design guides (IBC, ACI, Eurocodes, DIN, and AASHTO/FHWA); (4) utilizing technical literature to broaden understanding of design concepts and project approaches; and (5) utilizing geotechnical software packages, including PARIS, CACAO, PROVERBE, STABOU, KRANZ, BUTON, PLAXIS, and RSA Professional.
Must have knowledge of the following:
(1) soil mechanics, structural analysis principles, groundwater control, foundation and deep excavation behaviors; and (2) the construction processes utilized, and their limitations, for the range of Techniques listed above.
