About This Position

Description:

The Custom Millwork Pre Construction Manager is responsible for ensuring custom millwork and carpentry driven projects are buildable, well planned, and ready for fabrication before work begins. This role requires a strong, practical understanding of how millwork products are actually built, assembled, finished, transported, and installed, and the ability to strategize execution approaches based on experience and technical knowledge.

This position serves as the bridge between design intent and shop/field reality, coordinating closely with engineering/drafting, project management, purchasing, production, and installation teams. It supports leadership and project teams through forecasting, projecting, and build strategy planning, helping reduce risk, prevent rework, and improve overall execution.

Requirements:

Pre Construction Leadership & Coordination

  • Lead pre construction planning efforts across multiple custom projects
  • Coordinate with Engineering/Drafting, Project Management, Production, Purchasing, and Installation to align execution strategy for the project lifecycle
  • Serve as a primary point of responsibility for pre fabrication readiness
  • Support consistent pre construction workflows, scheduling, documentation, and project handoff
  • Review project costs and forecasting of materials, labor, and vendor costs, to ensure execution plans are within allocated budgets

________________________________________

Buildability & Technical Strategy (Core Focus)

  • Apply hands on knowledge of commercial millwork and carpentry construction to evaluate how products will be built and installed
  • Strategize execution considering:
  • Fabrication and assembly sequencing
  • Joinery methods and tolerances
  • Material behavior and finishes
  • Transportation, handling, and protection
  • Identify details that may be theoretically correct but impractical or high risk to fabricate
  • Work with engineering and operations to adjust strategies before drawings are released or fabrication begins
  • Serve as a technical resource who can problem solve and “think like the shop and the field” for successful project coordination and execution

________________________________________

Scope Review & Risk Identification

  • Review architectural, interior design, and specification documents to:
  • Confirm complete millwork scope (casework, paneling, specialty fixtures, etc.)
  • Identify missing scope gaps or conflicting information
  • Flag constructability and coordination risks
  • Oversee development and alignment of shop drawings with design intent and field conditions
  • Identify on-site field coordination and trade integration needed to mitigate installation challenges. Ensure projected field challenges are conveyed to the Project Manager and incorporated in the Shop Drawings for adjustments during fabrication.

________________________________________

Forecasting, Projecting & Planning Support

  • Provide project timelines and forward looking input related to:
  • Fabrication complexity and sequencing
  • Engineering and drafting design
  • Production and installation readiness
  • Long lead material impacts
  • Vendor integration and alignment to millwork scope
  • Support PMs and Operations with experience based planning insight
  • Coordinate shop capacity and production sequencing to meet installation deadlines

________________________________________

Engineering / Drafting Alignment

  • Partner with Engineering/Drafting to ensure shop drawings reflect how products will actually be built
  • Ensure drawings are accurate, buildable, and code-compliant
  • Confirm vendor scope is in alignment and coordinated to meet the tolerances and assumptions reflected in the millwork shop drawings
  • Help incorporate engineering solutions early to minimize downstream revisions during fabrication and installation
  • Support QA/QC reviews through clear scope continuity and documented assumptions

________________________________________

Turnover to Operations

  • Deliver a clear pre construction turnover transferring knowledge to include:
  • Final scope interpretations
  • Budget and scheduling alignment
  • Key assumptions and execution strategy
  • Identified risks and mitigation considerations
  • Production and procurement planning notes
  • Vendor management and risk analysis
  • On-site trade integration and installation sequencing
  • Ensure all documentation is complete and approved before fabrication
  • Conduct internal turnover meeting with shop and project management teams
  • Support smooth transition into fabrication and installation

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years of hands on experience in commercial millwork, custom carpentry, fabrication planning, or production driven pre construction
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Casework and architectural millwork construction methods and materials
  • Veneers, laminates, hardwood assemblies
  • Doors, hardware, moldings, and specialty features
  • Engineering design and production of shop drawings and submittals
  • Shop workflows, production constraints, and installation sequencing
  • Material takeoffs, labor costing, and vendor pricing
  • Scheduling tied to design, engineering, and procurement
  • Prior experience working closely with a fabrication shop or production environment
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to attend jobsite visits when required

Skills & Competencies

  • Deep understanding of architectural millwork buildability and constructability
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural/engineering drawings
  • Ability to visualize fabrication and installation directly from drawings
  • Strong problem solving and execution focused judgment
  • Clear communicator across technical and non technical teams
