About This Position
Position Summary:
The Lead Teacher provides a developmentally appropriate classroom environment that is creative, flexible, and rich in early childhood learning experiences. This position is responsible for delivering a high-quality experience for children and families while modeling and promoting the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. The Lead Teacher supports children’s growth and development while maintaining strong communication with families and collaborating with classroom staff.
Essential Functions:
The Lead Teacher implements curriculum within established program guidelines and designs and carries out daily lesson and activity plans. This role collaborates closely with the Teacher Associate to plan classroom activities and ensure a consistent, nurturing environment. The Lead Teacher supervises children, the classroom, and all activities while maintaining appropriate ratios and safety standards. Ongoing observation and assessment of each child’s development is required, along with maintaining accurate program documentation. The Lead Teacher conducts parent conferences, builds positive relationships with families, and communicates effectively regarding children’s progress and classroom activities. This position is responsible for maintaining the classroom environment, materials, and equipment, ensuring compliance with licensing, food program, and quality standards, and completing all required records. Participation in family nights, staff meetings, trainings, and program events is expected. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:
Applicants must meet educational and experience requirements established by state licensing regulations. A two-year degree in early childhood education or a related field is preferred. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and able to pass a criminal background check, physical, TB test, and immunization requirements. CPR, First Aid, AED, Mandatory Abuse Reporter, and Child Abuse Prevention certifications are required within 30 days of hire. Previous experience working with children in a developmental or early learning setting is preferred. Experience working with diverse populations and the ability to build positive, authentic relationships with individuals from different backgrounds is required.
Physical Demands:
This position requires the ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities in both indoor and outdoor settings. The Lead Teacher must be able to lift children or supplies weighing up to 20 pounds and must be able to walk, stand, and sit, including on the floor, for extended periods of time. The role involves bending, kneeling, leaning, and walking throughout the day.
