Role Summary:
The Academic Advisor is part of the Student Support Services team and provides academic advising to students enrolled in Huron programs. Working in a student-centered environment, the role maintains regular contact with academic departments regarding program and course requirements, curriculum changes, and academic program planning. The Academic Advisor also serves as a liaison with Western University and King’s University College, maintaining a working knowledge of programs and services available to Huron students.
Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate, timely, and student-centered academic advising to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, supporting academic success, progression, and degree completion
- Guide students on academic planning, course selection, program requirements, university policies, and academic regulations
- Maintain regular communication and collaboration with academic departments to stay informed of program requirements, curriculum changes, and course offerings
- Monitor and interpret academic rules and regulations and advise students on their impact related to registration, progression, and academic standing
- Serve as a liaison with Western University and King’s University College to ensure accurate advising regarding cross-institutional programs, policies, and services
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of campus services, academic support, and community resources, making appropriate referrals as needed
- Contribute as an integral member of the Student Support Services team by supporting student development, mental health awareness, and leadership initiatives at Huron
- Foster positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external partners through clear, respectful, and professional communication
- Utilize advising technologies and student systems to document advising interactions, manage caseloads, and support student outreach
- Participate fully in team meetings, training opportunities, service initiatives, and continuous improvement activities
- Deliver group advising sessions and presentations as required
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of Student Support Services and institutional priorities
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution required;
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience providing academic advising in a post-secondary or educational setting
- Demonstrated experience advising both domestic and international students
- Strong understanding of Arts and Social Science disciplines, including Theology majors
- Thorough knowledge of university academic policies, procedures, and regulations, and their impact on course and program registration
- Knowledge of academic, professional, and community-based resources available to students
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact positively, calmly, and professionally with students, faculty, staff, and the general public, including in public presentation settings
- Strong problem-solving skills with demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making abilities
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and contribute positively within a team-based environment
- Energetic, organized, self-motivated, adaptable, and flexible approach to work
- Experience with online advising tools (e.g., online appointment booking systems, CRM case management systems) is considered an asset
