As a Medical Assistant I at UNC Health Appalachian, you’ll play an essential role in outpatient care by supporting both clinical and administrative functions in a medical office setting. Working under the clinical supervision of a provider and the direction of clinic leadership, you’ll ensure patients receive compassionate, efficient, and high-quality care from check-in to follow-up.

Compensation: Starting at $17.87/hour, based on education, experience, certification, and internal equity.
Schedule: Primarily weekday shifts; may include occasional evenings or weekends depending on clinic needs.

What You’ll Do as a Medical Assistant
  • Support patient care by assisting with exams, procedures, and treatments under provider supervision.

  • Perform clinical tasks such as vital signs, specimen collection, and documentation.

  • Provide front-office support including scheduling, registration, and answering patient inquiries.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

  • Prepare exam rooms, equipment, and supplies in accordance with infection-prevention standards.

  • Offer patient education related to treatments, medications, and follow-up care.

  • Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and a strong commitment to patient-centered service.

  • Collaborate with providers, nurses, practice managers, and support staff to ensure smooth clinic operations.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Previous healthcare or medical office experience preferred, but not required.

Licensure & Certifications:

  • BLS (American Heart Association) required at hire.

  • RMA, CCMA, or AAMA certification required within one year of hire.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong organization and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and professionalism.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Basic understanding of medical terminology and EHR systems.

Physical & Work Environment
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.

  • Ability to lift or carry equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs.

  • Manual dexterity for clinical procedures and equipment operation.

  • Indoor clinical setting with routine exposure to patients, medical instruments, and bodily fluids.

  • May require schedule flexibility depending on clinic operations.
