AVP, Contract Surety Manager

This leadership role is centered on driving growth, profitability, and market presence within a regional contract surety portfolio. You will operate at the intersection of underwriting excellence and business development, shaping broker relationships and expanding surety capabilities across the U.S. market. The position combines strategic portfolio management with hands-on underwriting responsibility, ensuring high-quality risk selection and disciplined execution. You will play a key role in strengthening distribution partnerships while identifying new business opportunities in a competitive and evolving marketplace. In addition, you will contribute to team development by mentoring junior underwriters and elevating underwriting practices across the region. This is a highly visible role with direct impact on portfolio performance, regional strategy, and long-term business expansion.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will be responsible for managing and expanding a profitable surety portfolio while maintaining strong broker relationships and ensuring disciplined underwriting practices aligned with internal guidelines and strategic objectives.

  • Develop and execute regional surety strategies in collaboration with leadership to grow and maintain a profitable portfolio.
  • Underwrite contract surety business with a focus on risk quality, profitability, and long-term portfolio performance.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective brokers to drive business development.
  • Identify new market opportunities and actively expand distribution channels within the surety marketplace.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions are documented clearly, consistently, and in alignment with portfolio management standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-regional and international teams to leverage broader surety capabilities and customer relationships.
  • Participate in industry events and professional networks to strengthen market presence and visibility.
  • Mentor and support junior underwriters to build technical expertise and strengthen team performance.
Requirements

This role requires extensive experience in surety underwriting, strong market relationships, and the ability to balance strategic growth with disciplined risk management in a fast-paced, relationship-driven environment.

  • 7+ years of experience in the surety industry, with strong expertise in contract surety underwriting.
  • Proven track record of developing and growing a profitable surety portfolio.
  • Established relationships with brokers and strong market presence in the U.S. surety space.
  • Deep understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and portfolio management practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate business and expand distribution channels.
  • Strong entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to set and achieve strategic business objectives.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, finance, or a related field.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • Familiarity or interest in AI tools and data-driven approaches (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT) is a plus.
  • Ability to mentor junior talent and contribute to team development.
