Position Summary:
To perform assigned duties within the laboratory under the direction and supervision of the Pathology Assistant Manager and Cytology Technical Specialist. Responsible for accurate specimen registration, accessioning, documentation, and coordination in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures. Exercises professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload efficiently. Assumes responsibility and accountability for the accuracy and integrity of all work performed.
Department Summary:
The Aultman Laboratory and Pathology Department supports diagnostic testing for inpatient and outpatient populations and processes a wide variety of specimen types, including surgical pathology, cytology (gynecological and non-gynecological), and clinical laboratory specimens. The department collaborates with physicians, nursing units, and ancillary services to ensure accurate and timely diagnostic results and maintains compliance with regulatory, safety, and quality standards.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer skills required

Responsibilities & Expectations:
Specimen Registration & Accessioning
- Registers and accessions specimens into the hospital and laboratory information system accurately and efficiently
- Verifies patient demographics and required documentation at time of receipt
- Ensures appropriate orders are entered according to requisitions
- Scans and attaches documentation within the electronic medical record as required
- Verifies specimen labeling and documentation accuracy
- Refers unusual test requests or questions regarding specimen acceptability to the Technical Specialist or Pathology Assistant Manager
- Responds to STAT requests according to established protocol
- Monitors specimen intake areas and prioritizes workflow accordingly
- Maintains awareness of overall laboratory activity to assist areas as needed
Documentation & Coordination
- Follows all established laboratory policies and procedures
- Maintains awareness of regulatory requirements applicable to assigned duties
- Upholds hospital and laboratory standards for documentation accuracy
- Reviews department communications (email, bulletin board) as applicable
- Reviews procedures annually relative to scope of duties
Equipment & Supplies
- Maintains work areas in a clean and organized manner
- Notifies leadership of equipment or system issues
- Assists with maintaining adequate office and clerical supplies
Safety
- Follows Universal Precautions at all times
- Adheres to Hospital and Laboratory safety and Infection Control policies
- Participates in required safety education and fire drills
- Uses Tools & Tones for High Reliability to promote a culture of safety
Professionalism and Communication
- Accepts responsibility and maintains a cooperative and productive work environment
- Adheres to all policies described in the Aultman Hospital Code of Conduct and Employee Handbook
- Follows all policies of the Laboratory and Pathology Department as described in the Lab Policy Manual
- Maintains professional appearance in accordance with hospital dress code
- Arrives at work on time and begins work promptly
- Uses work time efficiently and assists team members when appropriate
- Returns promptly from lunch and breaks, following established guideline
- Uses spare time for work-related activities
- Assists the Technical Specialists in the training of personnel when requested
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Manager or Technical Specialist
