About This Position
Job Summary: The lead Pathologist Assistant functions serves as a lead technical expert, providing technical leadership and direction to Residents, pathologists’ assistants (PAs), grossing technicians. Functions as assistant to the Director of Division (Pathology) in the preparation and performance of gross surgical examinations. Responsible for processing surgical pathology specimens, including receipt, dissection, description, and examining, dissecting, and processing tissues. Also responsible for gross autopsy prosection and preliminary autopsy reports.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the manager/supervisor to address network workflow issues and/or improvement
- Help prioritize staff duties based on operational needs and assisting with
operational oversight of Gross Room.
- Monitors workload, staffing and educational needs of staff and trainees in the Gross Room and assists leadership in daily operations
- Assist with updating technical policy and procedure manuals. Reviews and updates procedures as required.
- Leads and teaches trainees, staff members and students, serving as a technical resource and advises on approaches for challenging or unique issues
- Train residents in the gross evaluation and dissection of surgical specimens and autopsy prosection
- Examines tissue samples to assist the pathologist in diagnosing disease and provides a general description of the sample and either determines if further analysis is needed or presents to Pathologist for final diagnoses;
- Assists the pathologist in the performance of the pro-section, including external examination, in situ inspection, evisceration, dissection, recording of data, dictation of descriptive information, and any such material relating to gross autopsy findings;
- Assists the pathologist in procuring autopsy material for tumor banking and tissue procurement and such bio analytic procedures as microbiological cultures, blood and serum analysis, and chemical and toxicological testing;
- Ensures proper restoration of bodies including notification of such biological hazards as contagious disease or radioactivity;
- Prepares quality assurance reports and workload reports;
- Provides technical direction in autopsy techniques for groups viewing an autopsy;
- Coordinates the support of photography services;
- Participates in projects assigned by leadership.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
- Must have a minimum of three years grossing experience in a teaching institution working with pathology residents.
- Knowledgeable with voice dictation software such as Voicebrook.
Education: A Master’s degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologist Assistant program
Licenses / Certifications: NYS License required
Certification through ASCP or AAPA preferred
