FLOATING CAREGIVER DESCRIPTION
Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)
Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish & School
2026-2027 school year - Starts in August of 2026
7:30 AM-3:30 PM, M-F
The GSRP Floating Caregiver offers flexible support to preschool students and teachers in GSRP classrooms, focusing on supervision, engagement, routines, and safety. While sharing many responsibilities with an early childhood paraprofessional, it does not handle lesson planning, documentation, or classroom leadership, serving mainly as a resource for on-demand instructional and behavioral support. Roles include supervising children during play, naptime, and activities, and assisting with meal prep and serving to ensure nutritious, age-appropriate meals.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
- Have a warm, supportive attitude toward children and families of all cultures
- Associate’s degree in early childhood education, Child Development, or a related field OR
- Child Development Associate (CDA) credential OR
- Equivalent qualifications as approved by the State Board (minimum of 120 clock hours)
- Training in CPR & First Aid, or willingness to be certified in both
- Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check (including fingerprinting) before employment and periodically afterward.
- Verification of negative TB status obtained within one year prior to employment.
- Valid Drivers’ License required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities desired.
- Evidence of successful teaching experience and proven proficiency in working with GSRP or preschool-age children.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director may find appropriate and acceptable.
- The preferred applicant is a practicing Catholic and demonstrates enthusiasm for sharing their faith with children through both knowledge and actions.
STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES:
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including:
- Express themselves effectively through verbal communication
- Communication and collaboration with the classroom teacher regarding children’s behavior and progress are essential
- Ability to read and understand instructions, correspondence, memos, GSRP policies, and handbooks
REASONING ABILITY: using common sense to understand, interpret, and carry out instructions in the following formats:
- Observe and record students’ performance, including relevant data to evaluate progress.
- To be able to understand basic computation across all units of measurement, utilizing whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- To demonstrate willingness to follow instructions in emergency situations
- To understand the State of Michigan “at-risk” factors as they relate to GSRP
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical requirements show what an employee must do to perform essential duties. Reasonable accommodation can help individuals with disabilities meet these functions. While working, the employee must:
- regularly bend, stand, walk, talk, twist, and may stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl for extended periods
- active supervision of students in classrooms, corridors, cafeterias, and playgrounds
- often use their hands to manipulate objects, regularly lift approximately 80 lbs., and push or pull weights up to 100 lbs
- have finger dexterity, can grasp objects, and perform repetitive motions
- visual acuity, including close, distance, peripheral vision, and focus adjustment
- attentively perceive and differentiate sounds at a moderate noise level
- follow written IEPs and support plans, ensuring all IEP requirements are met
- assisting children with personal health care and/or medical needs and grooming, including diapering if applicable
WORK ENVIRONMENT: reflects what an employee experiences while performing the core duties of this job. Reasonable accommodation can be provided to assist individuals with disabilities in carrying out the following essential functions:
- Adhering to the Great Start Readiness Program Implementation Manual and related documents, as outlined by MDE, is required
- must follow all of IHM’s Great Start Readiness Program Teacher Handbook and GSRP’s Policies and Procedures
- must be at work with regular, dependable, and punctual attendance a mandatory expectation.
- Will educate three and four-year-olds within a preschool setting
- May need to supervise the classroom during the lead teacher’s absence or assume the lead role when necessary
- Will engage with a vulnerable population meeting the program's eligibility criteria.
- Will integrate into the professional team-teaching model employed by GSRP
- Will collaborate with the GSRP Director and engage in identified committees and initiatives
- Will attend and contribute to professional development sessions.
- Will assist in the development and participation of recruitment and outreach initiatives.
- Will be required to conduct home visits and provide monthly parent nights.
- Will employ a consistent daily routine, ensuring a safe environment for all learners
- Must be able to always maintain confidentiality and a professional attitude
- Shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace

REPORTS TO: GSRP Director/Designate
EMPLOYMENT TERMS:
- 7:30 AM-3:30 PM, M-F. These hours could start at 10am and possibly go to 6pm for after-care.
- School Year
- Five days per week
- Position status – Based on Enrollment and Need, non-exempt work schedule could lead to a maximum of 40 hours per week.
- An hourly rate is commensurate with the candidate's education and proven experience.
