About This Position
Position Summary
The Metro Transfer Station Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of solid waste, leachate, recyclables, and other materials between Metro Waste Authority facilities and to the applicable treatment facilities. This role ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements under DOT guidelines and contributes to the cleanliness, safety, and professionalism of MWA operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Operates tractor-trailer truck to haul solid waste from transfer station to landfill; follows established procedures in loading, securing, and unloading materials.
- Operates tanker-trailer truck to transport leachate to off-site treatment facilities.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of tractor, trailer, and trailer, and tarping systems in accordance with DOT guidelines.
- Completes daily operation reports including documentation of equipment maintenance needs.
- Assists in the repair and maintenance of tractor-trailers, and related mechanical equipment.
- Understands and complies with all DOT and MWA regulations and policies governing the transport and delivery of solid waste materials.
- Maintains buildings, grounds, and premises of the physical facilities to ensure the workplace is tidy, clean, and safe.
- Cleans up debris and litter at all MWA facilities.
- Provides courteous external and internal customer service according to MWA Customer Service standards.
- Understands and properly manages interactions with the public while driving to include public perception of MWA driver’s professionalism, litter control and overall image.
- Adheres to all applicable laws and regulations.

Travel
This position requires travel in and around the Des Moines metro area to support all Metro Waste Authority Facilities.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Valid Commercial driver’s license (CDLA) w/ job related endorsements (Tanker, Airbrake)
- 1-3 years’ experience on and off-road driving
- Knowledge of FMCSA Clearinghouse Procedures
- Operates manual and automatic transmission vehicles
- Ability to use onboard vehicle systems and GPS routing tools
- Familiarity with safety protocols and PPE usage
Preferred Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent

Work Environment
Work is performed in an environment with undesirable conditions: exposure to extreme heat and cold, odors, noise, dust, fumes, moving parts, electrical shock, burns and toxic agents. Occupational hazards such as those generally associated with ongoing exposure to moving machinery/equipment leading to cuts, bruises, burns, strains, back injuries, and potentially more serious injuries. Knowledge of commercial driving regulations and demonstrated skill in maneuvering vehicles in difficult situations such as narrow passageways and ice covered and slick road surfaces. Regular exposure to undesirable elements such as wind, rain, snow, high or low temperatures, as well as extremely hazardous road conditions which could lead to significant consequences.
