About This Position

MISSION: To educate Christians who will make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ.

SUMMARY: The Director of Campus Safety is responsible for: 1) the development, implementation, and management of campus safety and security programs and services including but not limited to security, environmental health and safety, fire safety, emergency management, parking management and key control, 2) compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations related to campus safety, and 3) ensuring that day-to-day security, public safety functions, and new initiatives are aligned with the University’s strategic plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leadership and management of the Department of Campus Safety, a 24/7/365 operation; including hiring, training, direction and supervision
  • Development and maintenance of excellent working relationships with students, faculty, staff and external customers/constituents
  • Develop and implement comprehensive public safety programs, policies, and procedures
  • Compliance with local, state and federal crime reporting mandates
  • Collaboration with local officials to address matters of mutual concern
  • Coordination with internal/external emergency response protocols and/or agencies
  • Development and administration of the departmental budget
  • Continuous improvement in departmental services to meet or exceed internal and external expectations
  • Supervision of the Campus Safety Supervisor
  • Oversight and management of First Aid/AED contracts and compliance
  • Oversight of the key control program for all academic and administrative buildings
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of criminal justice, law enforcement, and higher education protocols/procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of Uniform Crime Report definitions
  • Leadership and management skills sufficient to lead a staff operating on a 24/7 schedule
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, organizational, written and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with local community and leadership
  • Understanding of and appreciation for current student issues
  • Ability to handle crisis situations
  • Maturity supported by a strong ethical character
  • Ability to relate to and interact effectively with diverse populations
  • Tolerance for ambiguity, sensitivity and orientation to be successful in a church-related, liberal
    arts institution
  • Strong background in emergency management, NIMS, and ICS
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate observations and explain actions, to write clear and concise reports, as well as make presentations to the campus community
  • Ability to walk several flights of stairs repeatedly
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Ability to demonstrate self-restraint in challenging situations
  • Ability to relate to and gain the confidence and cooperation of the Corban University community
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a wide variety of people and act calmly and rationally in an emergency
  • Ability to work without direct supervision, handle multiple priorities, and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to operate computer equipment and a 2-way radio
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance
  • Skills to support a culture of accountability, good judgment, excellent customer service, reliability, discretion, decision-making and problem-solving abilities, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural setting.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree required – Master’s Preferred
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Requires certification as an Oregon Private Security Armed/Unarmed Professional, Executive Manager, and Unarmed Instructor through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment).
  • Must have and maintain a current first-aid card with CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment).
  • No convictions for narcotics or thefts.
  • No disqualifying violations as stated by Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Testing.
  • License: Current Oregon Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain within 30-days from hire date and meet the requirements to drive campus vehicles.
  • License: Current Oregon Concealed Handgun License or the ability to obtain within 30-days from hire date.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Positions in Campus Safety requires the incumbent to safely operate a motor vehicle, walk, reach, bend, climb or pull self upward, kneel, stoop, crawl, run at a moderate pace for short distances (equivalent to one mile in ten minutes or faster), crouch, and perform similar functions while patrolling campus and campus facilities. The job requires occasional exposure to extremes of weather and large crowds. Position involves extended standing and walking, and some lifting up to 70 pounds as well as the potential for rescue assistance of persons who may be unconscious and require moving. Exposure to inclement weather and safety hazards exists as well as possible threats of physical harm. A computer is used less than 25 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
