Phlebotomist at Appalachian Regional Healthcare System – Boone, North Carolina

Location: Boone, North Carolina | Full-Time | Monday - Friday

As a Phlebotomist at UNC Health Appalachian, you play a critical role in patient care by safely and accurately collecting blood specimens for diagnostic testing. Your work directly supports timely diagnoses, patient safety, and high-quality outcomes across inpatient and outpatient settings. You’ll join a collaborative laboratory team committed to compassion, precision, and service excellence—all while living and working in the beautiful High Country.

Compensation: Starts at $16.85 /hour, based on education, experience, and internal equity.

• Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.

• Accurately identify patients and specimens to ensure safety and compliance with laboratory standards.

• Process and handle specimens according to laboratory policies and regulatory requirements.

• Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare team members.

• Utilize laboratory information systems and computer applications to document and track specimens.

• Respond promptly and appropriately to changes in patient condition or emergent situations.

• Support coworkers, patients, and visitors in alignment with scope of practice and departmental needs.

• Demonstrate ARHS Mission, Vision, and Values through professionalism, accountability, and teamwork.

• High school diploma required.

• Formal phlebotomy training or documented on-the-job training sufficient to qualify for certification.

• Completion of training with a minimum of 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections required.

• Previous experience as a phlebotomist preferred.

• Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or documented on-the-job training meeting venipuncture and capillary collection requirements.

• National phlebotomy certification preferred but not required.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at time of hire.

• Knowledge of venipuncture techniques, medical terminology, and basic circulatory system concepts.

• Ability to communicate courteously and effectively using positive verbal and non-verbal skills.

• Competence in safe specimen collection and processing within legal and policy guidelines.

• Strong customer service skills when interacting with patients, families, and staff.

• Proficiency with laboratory computer systems; ability to type at least 25 WPM.

• Lift, position, push, pull, and/or transfer objects and patients weighing 50 pounds or more.

• Manual dexterity and mobility required.

• Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking.

• Frequent bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.

• Near visual acuity required (ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less).

• Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

• Frequent exposure to electrical, mechanical, and power equipment hazards, odorous chemicals, and laboratory specimens.

• Subject to irregular hours including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergencies.

• Continuous standing and walking for 8+ hours per shift.

• Frequent fine motor movements involving hands, fingers, and wrists.

• Frequent exposure to chemicals and reagents used in laboratory specimen processing.

• Possible exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
