About This Position

The Atlanta History Center (AHC) is seeking two Outreach Curriculum Specialists (specializing in elementary and middle school education) to execute a fixed-term project funded by the IMLS Museums for America grant. This position is as an independent contractor and is primarily remote, with the exception of one mandatory in-person meeting.

The specialist will be responsible for the design and delivery of comprehensive lesson plans, student activities, and educator assessments leveraging AHC digital collection surrogates. The project focuses on specific historical eras, the Civil War, WWII, and Civil Rights, for elementary & middle schoolers. Vietnam War for middle school only and Westward Expansion for elementary school only.

    Curriculum Development: Design and deliver a comprehensive suite of 10 original lesson plans and student activities inspired by the Traveling Trunks program, suitable for public distributions.Artifact Selection: Independently identify and integrate 2-3 digital artifact surrogates per lesson unit, ensuring at least one IMLS-funded surrogate is featured in each.Strategic Collaboration: Coordinate with the manager of education outreach programs to ensure all materials align with the project's curricular standards and grant requirements.Project Milestones & Reporting: Provide biweekly project status updates to the manager of education outreach programs to review progress toward deadlines, address technical requirements, and ensure alignment with the IMLS project timeline.

Compensation:

This is a milestone-based contract with the potential to earn up to $6,000 total:

  • Phase I: Up to $4,000
  • Phase II: Up to $2,000

Experience and Skills:

    Must be a current active educator within an elementary or middle school environment with a minimum of 3 years of independent instructional experience.Proven track record of developing curriculum that successfully utilizes artifacts or primary sources to drive student engagement.Ability to work independently across various digital platforms and content management systems.Ability to manager complex project timelines and meet strict production deadlines.Experience participating in iterative design processes, including the ability to incorporate feedback with final deliverables.Proficient in collaborative digital tools, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.Research capabilities, with the ability to utilize various research techniques and tools.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Mandatory requirements:

    Attend an in-person instructional meeting May 27, 2026
  • Commit to two phases of the project term.
      Phase I: June 2026 - August 2026
  • Phase II: October 2026-November 2026

Timeline: * Candidate Selection: The search committee will meet on April 28, 2026, to review applications.

  • Interviews: Shortlisted candidates must be available for two rounds of virtual interviews between late April and early May.

  • Final Notification: All candidates will receive a status update by May 8, 2026.

  • Onboarding: Selected specialists are required to attend an in-person orientation on May 27, 2026, with the project officially commencing onJune 3, 2026.

Note: As this is a primarily remote independent contractor role, relocation expenses are not provided.
