Position Description:
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Youth Programs Coordinator for School serves in the family, youth, and school learning division of the San Antonio Botanical Garden Learning & Interpretation Department. The Youth Programs Coordinator for Schools is responsible for coordinating and facilitating school programs in collaboration with the Director of Family, Youth & School Learning. Using best practices and audience feedback they will design and provide relevant, engaging, and high-quality programming to deepen students and teachers connections with plants and nature. This position requires the ability to teach as well as train and collaborate with part-time educators and volunteers to lead and support school and teacher programs. While the primary audiences served are students and teachers, this position will work closely with other members of the department to serve youth, family, and intergenerational audiences.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Plan, develop, and implement youth educational programs in collaboration with the Director of Family, Youth and School Learning.
  • Assist with the daily operations of school and teacher programs in the Garden, while also supporting camps, classes, drop-ins, demonstrations, and family events when needed.
  • Work collaboratively with program team members and cross-department teams to deliver diverse, quality, and engaging programs.
  • Foster partnerships within the school community to increase access to programs.
  • Maintain and report participation records and evaluation data as needed for grants, budgeting, and annual reporting.
  • Develop and maintain interpretive materials related to school audiences.
  • Maintain and organize educational supplies, storage areas and classrooms.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelors Degree is preferred in one of the following areas: environmental education, early childhood or elementary education, horticulture, natural sciences, nutrition, or other subjects that align with education in an outdoor setting.
  • A minimum of 2-years experience working with family, youth, and/or school audiences in a garden based or informal education learning environment.
  • Schedule is primarily Monday-Friday, some evenings and weekends are required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • A strong work ethic, ability to maintain and model professional standards.
  • Ability to work with diverse visitors, staff, and volunteers is necessary while representing the Garden in a thoughtful, friendly, and positive manner with professionalism and competence.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic organizational skills are required.
  • Familiarity with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
  • Proficient with MS office programs.
  • A passion for plants and the outdoors with an understanding and appreciation of the mission of the Garden is crucial.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and to bend and reach shelving. Ability and willingness to work out-of-doors in varying weather conditions.
  • Position requires the ability to remain positive and engaging in a varying outdoor environment with various weather conditions.

Compensation: Compensation will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the individual.
