Assistant Manager in Houston, Texas at Vanderlande Logistics LLC

Position Summary

The Assistant Manager supports the Site Manager in the daily leadership, coordination, and performance of Vanderlande’s Baggage Handling System (BHS) operations at Houston Airport site. This role ensures safe, efficient, and reliable system performance while leading a team of Technicians and Floor Support staff. The Assistant Manager helps drive operational excellence, employee development, customer satisfaction, and compliance with airport and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

• Assist in managing day‑to‑day BHS operations to ensure system uptime, safety, and performance.
• Monitor system health, respond to operational disruptions, and coordinate corrective actions.
• Support planning and execution of maintenance activities, inspections, and system resets.
• Ensure compliance with airport regulations, safety standards, and Vanderlande procedures.
• Serve as acting Site Manager when required.

Team Management & Development

• Supervise, coach, and support Technicians, Jr. Techs, and Floor Support staff.
• Assist with scheduling, timekeeping, performance reviews, and corrective actions.
• Promote a positive, inclusive, and safety‑focused team culture.
• Support onboarding and ongoing training for new and existing employees.

Customer & Stakeholder Coordination

• Maintain strong working relationships with airport partners, airlines, and stakeholders.
• Communicate operational updates, system impacts, and service expectations.
• Participate in meetings, walkthroughs, and collaborative problem‑solving sessions.

Administrative & Reporting Duties

• Assist with reporting, documentation, and data tracking for KPIs, downtime, and incidents.
• Support budget awareness, inventory tracking, and procurement needs.
• Prepare and maintain logs, shift reports, and compliance documentation.

Qualifications

Required

• 2+ years of experience in airport operations, baggage handling systems, industrial maintenance, or related technical environment.
• Prior leadership or supervisory experience.
• Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to work in a 24/7 operational environment (shift work, weekends, holidays).
• Ability to obtain and maintain all required airport security clearances.

Preferred

• Experience with automated systems, PLC‑based equipment, or mechanical/electrical troubleshooting.
• Previous experience in a Vanderlande environment or similar BHS operation.
• Familiarity with airport safety, TSA/FAA regulations, and operational protocols.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work in confined or elevated spaces.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Work performed in active airport operational areas with noise, moving machinery, and varying temperatures.
