Under general direction, to provide professional psychiatric, diagnostic, and therapeutic services for Mental Health Department clients; to conduct clinical interviews for clients who have complex mental health needs; to assist with the education and training of other staff, community agencies and the public; and to do related work as required.

• Principles and practices of modern clinical psychiatry and general medicine.
• Characteristics and requirements of psychiatric institutions.
• Welfare and Institution laws relative to the care of clients in a Mental Health system.
• Methods of evaluation and treatment of mental illness.
• Psycho-pharmacology
• Principles and methods of psychiatric research and diagnosis.
• Principles of mental health education and counseling.
  • Community organizations, resources, and allied mental health services available in the local area.
• Recovery-oriented principles of psychiatric care.
• Possession of a valid Illinois license as a physician/surgeon
  • Completion of three (3) years of graduate training in psychiatry in a program approved by the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association.
  • Certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is highly desirable.
