About the Role:

The Lab Assistant plays a critical role in supporting the daily operations of healthcare laboratories by ensuring that all laboratory activities are conducted efficiently and accurately. This position involves collecting, preparing and transporting specimens, maintaining laboratory equipment, and assisting with routine tests under the supervision of senior laboratory personnel. The Lab Assistant contributes to the accuracy and reliability of test results by adhering to strict protocols and quality control measures. Additionally, the role requires meticulous documentation and compliance with safety and regulatory standards to maintain a safe working environment. Ultimately, the Lab Assistant helps facilitate timely and precise diagnostic services that are essential for patient care and laboratory department initiatives within the healthcare facility.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and hygiene practices.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols accurately.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Completion of a certificate or diploma program in medical laboratory technology or related field.
• Previous experience working in a clinical or research laboratory setting.
• Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
• Basic understanding of medical terminology and laboratory procedures.
• CPR certification or other relevant healthcare certifications.

Responsibilities:

• Collect, label, and prepare biological specimens for analysis according to established protocols.
• Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, ensuring they are clean, calibrated, and functioning properly.
• Assist laboratory technologists and technicians with routine tests and procedures, following detailed instructions.
• Maintain accurate records of specimens, test results, and laboratory activities in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Ensure the laboratory environment is clean, organized, and adheres to safety and infection control standards.
• Manage inventory of laboratory supplies and notify supervisors when reordering is necessary.
• Dispose of biohazardous waste safely and in accordance with health and safety regulations.

The Lab Assistant utilizes strong organizational and communication skills daily to coordinate specimen handling and ensure clear documentation. Attention to detail is essential when preparing samples and recording data to maintain the integrity of test results.
