Overview
About ITT Aerospace Controls
ITT Aerospace Controls, headquartered in Valencia, CA, is a premier supplier of highly engineered components and integrated solutions for mechanical and environmental control systems serving both commercial and military aerospace applications. Our products support critical fluid handling, actuation, and utility functions in demanding operating environments.
Position Summary
The Tooling Designer III is an engineering design role responsible for developing, documenting, and validating production tooling, fixtures, and test support equipment used in the manufacture of aerospace electromechanical actuators, valves, pumps, and related hardware.
This position operates within the design engineering function, with primary responsibility for tooling concept development, CAD modeling, engineering drawings, and tolerance definition. The role requires hands-on machining and fabrication capability to build, prove out, and refine tooling designs, support rapid iteration, and ensure manufacturability. Fabrication and machining activities are performed in support of engineering objectives and tooling design validation.
Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering design and documentation of tooling, fixtures, gages, and test support equipment using SolidWorks (preferred), Creo, and/or AutoCAD
- Develop detailed 3D models and fabrication drawings in compliance with ASME Y14.100 and ANSI Y14.5 GD&T standards
- Apply engineering judgment to define critical features, tolerances, fits, and functional requirements for tooling
- Perform tolerance stack-ups and tolerance analyses to ensure tooling performance and repeatability
- Reverse engineer existing tooling or hardware by leveraging inspection tools, measurements, and manufacturing knowledge where formal documentation does not exist
- Use precision inspection equipment (calipers, micrometers, height gages, indicators, CMM data where available) to capture dimensional and functional requirements
- Machine and fabricate tooling components using manual and CNC milling and turning equipment to support tooling validation, prototype builds, and production readiness
- Fabricate and assemble tooling to verify design intent, identify improvement opportunities, and support initial production use
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing engineering, quality, inspection, and machine shop personnel to ensure tooling designs meet production needs
- Troubleshoot tooling-related issues and implement design improvements based on shop-floor feedback
- Support new product development and prototype builds through rapid tooling design and iteration
- Support tooling-related Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
Qualifications
- Education / Experience (one of the following):
- Associate’s degree with 10+ years of tooling design and manufacturing experience
- Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of tooling design and manufacturing experience
- Proven experience in engineering design of tooling and fixtures
- Advanced 3D CAD modeling and detailed drawing creation; Creo preferred
- Strong proficiency in GD&T per ANSI Y14.5
- Demonstrated ability to apply manufacturing knowledge to tooling design decisions
- Hands-on capability operating manual and CNC milling and turning equipment to support tooling validation
- Experience translating physical hardware into accurate CAD models and engineering drawings
- Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, and fabrication methods
- Ability to independently take tooling from concept through design, build, and validation
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with minimal supervision
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a cross-functional engineering and manufacturing environment
- Aerospace industry experience strongly preferred
- Position is full-time on-site in Valencia, CA
Preferred experience
- Experience reverse engineering legacy or undocumented tooling
- Experience designing tooling for aerospace fluid systems or electromechanical actuation hardware
- Familiarity with AS9100 manufacturing environments
- Experience supporting production ramp-ups or first-article builds
