About This Position

TITLE: Intern - Mill City Museum


LOCATION: Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd St., Mpls, MN 55401


COMPENSATION: $16.50 hourly

HOURS: This is a part-time, temporary position from approximately June 8, 2026 to August 30, 2026. A part-time intern must be available to work 10-12 hours per week. This position offers a flexible work schedule, coordinated with the intern’s schedule and operational needs. Ideally, the intern will be able to work 5-6 hour shifts split over Wednesday and Thursday between 9:00am-5:00pm.

SEMINAR EVENTS: Interns are required to participate in three, in-person seminars focused on professional development, learning how cultural organizations operate, and building a network of industry professionals. At the end of the semester, interns complete a final presentation to share their work.

DESCRIPTION: The Mill City Museum intern supports staff in cataloging, digitization, and organization of the staff library and research materials. The position provides hands-on experience in visitor services, and offers exposure to the broader functions of museum operations and interpretation. This internship provides introductory site-based experience with cataloging and digitizing research materials.


This position does not include formal training in cataloging or digitization principles and practices.


RESPONSIBILITIES: 1) Assist with organizing the Mill City staff library to improve accessibility and usability of materials; 2) Participate in the digitization and organization of staff research materials, gaining exposure to documentation standards and best practices; 3) Assist in organizing and processing of program-use materials and objects; 4) Shadow staff in visitor services and interpretation to understand museum duties and operations; 5) Under guidance, assist in a limited capacity with museum operations, including the information desk.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student, or have graduated within the past 12 months at the time of application.

  • Ideal candidates might be currently pursuing, or have graduated with a degree in the following areas: History, library science, information science, liberal arts/humanities

  • Detail oriented and well organized.

  • Enjoyment in sharing historical knowledge.

  • Ability to take direction but work autonomously.
