The System Safety Engineer - Vehicle Integration will support the Safety and Mission Assurances Support Services (SMASS) contract located at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide system safety engineering support to Space Launch System (SLS) Program integration activities through the identification and analysis of potential hazards associated with integrated vehicle interfaces and mission events. Classify identified risks in terms of severity and likelihood, and present results to Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Management and other risk accepting authorities during development milestone reviews, Table-Top Safety Reviews (TTSRs), and other technical and SMA reviews in support of flight readiness and certification.
- Prepare and/or assess System Safety Program Plans to assure compliance with applicable Agency, Center and Program safety requirements.
- Review and assess Program documentation (e.g., Contractor PWS, Data Requirement Deliverables, System Requirements Document, Contract End Item, Requirements Verification Compliance procedures, etc.) to assure that safety requirements are addressed in compliance with Agency, Center, and Program requirements.
- Participate in Trade Studies related to design, development, operation, or mission events for assigned in-house and contracted projects, to assure compliance with safety requirements and to assure safety risks are identified, characterized, and mitigated.
- Develop, review, and maintain safety analyses and supporting safety products (e.g., hazard analyses, hazard reports, and related artifacts) defining hazard causes, controls, and methods of verification/validation.
- Assess proposed changes to Program documentation and configurations to assure compliance with safety requirements. This assessment includes evaluation of the impacts to safety and hazard analyses and the effects on program or project risk (e.g., engineering change packages, waivers/deviations, and other change actions).
- Evaluate and provide recommendations for acceptance of Non-compliance Reports, and Requests for Waiver/Deviations, including documenting safety impacts and required updates to hazard analyses/hazard reports and safety verification evidence.
- Support and/or evaluate reliability and safety analyses as required (e.g., Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Critical Item/Criticality tracking) and assess impacts to hazard controls and verification.
- Track to closure all System Safety Analysis Report (SSAR) review comments and Tabletop Safety Review (TTSR) Action Items and Agreements; ensure resulting updates to hazard products and verification evidence are completed and traceable.
- Assess and support development of program or project verification plans and verification requirements (e.g., Verification Plans, Detailed Verification Objective (DVO) documents) to assure all safety verification requirements are properly included.
- Assess or generate safety verification compliance data to assure it clearly demonstrates compliance with the safety verification requirements and parent safety requirements.
- Track and/or monitor the implementation and validation of hazard controls in accordance with approved hazard reports and verification plans. Confirm/validate successful closure of hazard control verifications. Further, develop and present operational hazard control verification evidence to the Safety Verification Board responsible.
- Assess test and operating procedures to assure compliance with safety controls and safety verification requirements.
- Develop and present status reports to upper management during various program management reviews such as Certificate of Flight Readiness Review (COFR), Stage Operations Readiness Review (SORR), and Flight Readiness Review (FRR).
- Develop and provide input for SMASS Contract Data Requirement Deliverables (DRDs) as necessary (including weekly/Monthly activity notes, Management Status Reviews (MSRs), Performance Evaluation Board (PEB) inputs, etc.).
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED:

- Must have a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering, or a related field.
- Must have 5+ years of recent and related work experience supporting system safety engineering for complex systems (aerospace experience preferred).
- In lieu of degree: Candidates with 9+ years of recent and related experience will be considered.
- Possess demonstrable experience in the performance of system safety hazard analyses and documenting results (e.g., development of System Safety Analysis Reports (SSARs) including hazard reports defining hazard causes, controls, and methods of verification/validation).
- Working experience applying one or more system safety/reliability methods such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Functional Failure Analysis (FFA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and/or similar types of system safety engineering analysis, as appropriate to assigned tasks.
- Experience supporting safety verification planning and closure (e.g., development/assessment of verification plans and requirements, tracking objective evidence, validating hazard control verification closure).
- Experience assessing safety impacts of configuration changes (e.g., change packages, waivers/deviations) and non-compliances, and ensuring required updates to hazard analyses/hazard reports and verification evidence are completed.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to develop deliverables, trackers, and briefings.
DESIRED:
- Prior experience with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) processes and procedures is highly desired.
- Prior experience in the use of System Safety analysis tools such as CAFTA, Saphire, or similar software analysis tools.
- Skilled in working with both Prime Contractor and NASA senior level engineering and Program/Project Managers in a professional manner and able to communicate complex safety and engineering issues in an understandable and diplomatic manner.
WORK LOCATION:
- This position is located onsite at Marshall Spaceflight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville Alabama.
- This position offers a 9/80 schedule, every other Friday off, some travel may be required.
- Schedules are subject to change based on the requirements of the position and/or customer needs.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED:
