About This Position

Job Summary:
Provides assistance to physicians or other staff members in a clinical environment. Assist with providing a safe, clean setting for patients during their clinic visits. Utilizes appropriate equipment and resources under supervision of a physician or licensed staff member. Performs clerical duties as required.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
Obtains and documents chief complaint, history, current medications and allergies as evidenced in chart review.
Assesses and records patient’s vital signs, blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respirations, weight and length measurements as appropriate for age as evidenced in chart review.
Assists with and prepares patients for exams and procedures after assessing patients understanding and consent
Obtains and accurately labels blood and urine samples.
Tests blood and urine specimens as determined by experience and training and routes all other tests to prober laboratories.
Administers medication and immunizations along with proper patient counseling as set forth in policies and procedures without incidence of adverse outcomes.
Provides care appropriate for the neonate and the pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
Assesses and interprets data on neonate and the pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients’ status to identify patients’ requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.
Maintains a current inventory of supplies and periodically reviews the stock levels needed with the supervisor.
Maintains inventory stock forms as required for the State Pharmacy Board, Texas Department of Health and the Medical Center
Maintains exam rooms and laboratory in the same manner.
Trains other medical assistants
Attend periodic workshops/seminars to learn about changes, and customer service training.
Practices Time Management
Assists with gathering data to assist with the Performance Improvement Process
Identify location of fire alarms and fire extinguishers in area
Knows appropriate response to codes
Able to locate MSDS
Meets the patient’s needs, regardless of whether the need is related to “your” specific area, maintaining a positive customer relations atmosphere
Participates in Teamwork, assisting other departments/co-workers as necessary
Demonstrates understanding of policies on ethics
Frequently evaluates equipment to assure proper functioning.
Professional Requirements:
Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean
Always maintain patient confidentiality
Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time
Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly
Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department
Regulatory Requirements:
• High School graduate or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant School.
Language Skills:
• Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Additional languages preferred.
• Excellent customer services skills.
Skills:
• Basic computer knowledge.
• Ability to type 45 wpm
Licensure, Registry or Certification:
• Certification as a Medical Assistant
Technical Training:
• Current CPR
• One year’s experience in a medical setting preferred.
