About This Position
BRIEF SUMMARY: Lead Histology Technician has technical expertise and leadership skills to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of services provided by the Pathology Department. This position coordinates with the Pathologist/Medical Lab Director and to the Director of Lab Services for operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises and coordinates the histology laboratory’s preparation and staining of the tissue sections from surgical tissue or body fluids for microscopic study and interpretation by the pathologist.
- Supervises and coordinates work and priorities with the pathologist.
- Assists pathologist in preparing frozen sections.
- Maintains equipment logs and assigned area in compliance with accreditation and regulatory agencies.
- Ensures each staff member is competent to perform the functions of their position.
- Assures inventory of supplies and inventory of tissues, blocks, slides and shipment of specimens to pathologist or sponsor.
- Troubleshoots equipment and staining problems and acts as a consultant for such problems.
- Supervises the quality control and routine maintenance of equipment in the department.
- Performs as the pathology information system expert. Make revisions, generate reports, testing and validating all software and hardware revisions in coordination with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) Manager.
- Implements and ensures an active quality assurance program for the department.
- Maintains operations to ensure regulatory compliance, including Joint Commission, CLIA’88, and California Department of Public Health.
- Performs as the Laboratory and Pathology Department Safety Officer. In coordination with QA Specialist of the Laboratory.
- Fosters a team environment. Maintains good customer relations.
- Capable of performing all technical aspects of the pathology department.
- Performs other job duties as assigned or requested pertaining to the position.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
- Requires good working knowledge of medical terminology.
- Requires interpersonal skills necessary to maintain a cooperative working relationship
within the department.
- Supervisory skills in a customer-oriented environment.
- Computer skills to include word processing and spread sheets.
- Knowledge of hazardous waste handling and disposal.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- ASCP HT or HLT certification preferred but not required or be eligible for certification based on experience and/or education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Job exposes worker to hazardous and bio-hazardous materials. Standard precautions must be followed.
