About the role
- We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Senior Process/Manufacturing Engineer focused on developing, optimizing, and manufacturing the cathode material for advanced nickel hydrogen battery applications. This is a strategic, hands-on leadership role critical to our mission. You will be the owner of our cathode supply, develop the manufacturing equipment and processes, drive improvement activities, then deploy solutions at our production site.
Position Targets / Outcomes:
- Develop Manufacturing Solution: Work with suppliers to develop material, processes, and equipment for cathode production.
- Process optimization: Develop and scale up cathode processing techniques, including coating, calendaring, and drying of electrode slurries.
- Establish Production Yield Improvement System:
- Develop documentation to define manufacturing procedures, process control, and equipment maintenance. Drive yield improvement activities.
- Oversee the development and execution of comprehensive test plans, including Design Verification (DV), Process Validation (PV), and highly accelerated life testing (HALT).
· Characterization & Analysis: Conduct physical and electrochemical characterization of materials using techniques like XRD, SEM, and galvanostatic charge-discharge cycling to evaluate structural and performance metrics.
· Performance Enhancement: Work with R&D teams to troubleshoot capacity fading, optimize rate capability, and improve cycle life for next-generation energy storage devices.
- Technology Transfer:
- Transfer cathode manufacturing technology to alternative suppliers.
- Establish transfer protocol.
- Train engineering and production teams on the production process.
- Build the Cathode Team: Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of process engineers, equipment engineers, and technicians.
- HVM Scaleup:
- Plan, design, and budget a HVM manufacturing facility – Capex, process requirements, facilities requirement, etc.
- Manage and execute construction plans, tool installation, tool start up, and process qualification.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience working in electrode (cathode) manufacturing process and volume manufacturing
- Proven experience in battery manufacturing, electrode (cathode) materials development, or, ideally, specific experience with nickel-based materials
· Strong understanding of electrochemistry.
- Experience with slurry preparation, electrode coating, and calendaring. Experience with reel to reel or roll to roll system
- Strong ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- The individual should be able to balance short-term, urgent needs with long-term strategic initiatives.
- Detail orientation with a strong quality mindset. Enjoy working in a team environment.
- The candidate should have previous experience in the following areas: Design Controls, Change Control, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design/Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
- Good understanding of statistical methods, six sigma methodologies, design of experiments and lean manufacturing.
- Clear verbal, written, and presentation skills, and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across all business levels and functions
- Deep understanding of the entire product lifecycle, from design and development to high-volume manufacturing and field deployment.
- Exceptional data analysis skills and a metric-driven approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, electrochemistry or a related field.
