Summary:
The Technical Trainer is responsible for hands-on wastewater technical training for the Operations and/or Maintenance Departments. This role involves assessing training needs, creating curriculum and materials and conducting sessions to improve employee competency. Overtime and flexible work schedule to support shift employees may be required on an as needed basis and with prior approval from the Chief Human Resources Officer.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Serves as a key hands-on trainer for Operations and/or Maintenance.
- Operations Trainer to include Liquids and Solids Process; fully versed in the operation of all process sections. Understands limits of own knowledge and who and where to turn when additional information is needed. Seeks to continually learn new things, revisits and re-evaluates old information and shares knowledge.
- Responsible for training operations technicians on all shifts, hours and days worked will vary.
- Performs hands-on and theoretical training for new technicians with one-on-one or group training. Demonstrates tasks, explains process operations and conducts field walkthroughs. Ability to keep staff engaged during training sessions.
- Maintenance Trainer to include mechanical, electrical, preventive and facilities. Fully versed in the maintenance of all areas of maintenance and facilities. Understands limits of own knowledge and who and where to turn when additional information is needed. Seeks to continually learn new things, revisits and re-evaluates old information and shares knowledge.
- Responsible for training maintenance and facilities staff.
- Performs hands-on and theoretical training for new Maintenance, Control System and Facilities Technicians with one-on-one or group training. Demonstrates tasks, explains process and conducts field walkthroughs. Ability to keep staff engaged during training sessions.
- Operations Trainer to include Liquids and Solids Process; fully versed in the operation of all process sections. Understands limits of own knowledge and who and where to turn when additional information is needed. Seeks to continually learn new things, revisits and re-evaluates old information and shares knowledge.
- Conducts or assists with recurring training sessions for all technicians to attend to include the development of training presentations and public speaking.
- Continually seeks to solve problems and improve the performance of the facility and the skill set of the technicians. Identifies what needs to be done, accurately identifies stakeholders and seeks input, takes action and communicates outcome. Actively seeks and involves subject matter experts in the training program.
- Works closely with other departments as needed to update related training materials.
- Ensure that all training materials are accurate and accessible
- Oversee periodic review process standard technical training materials to include: UPCPs (Plant O&M Manual), Biosolids Management Plan, Reclaimed Water Plan, SOPs, process modules, and others as assigned; to ensure that they reflect the most current operational conditions.
- Reviews, edits and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Organize and maintain technical training library in SharePoint so that files are available as needed.
- Coordinate technical review of new training materials, provide timely feedback on internal and external training materials.
- Ensure that new equipment is incorporated into standard training materials.
- Plan, track, and deliver training to all technicians
- With support from Supervisors, create training plans for technicians.
- With support from Supervisors, ensure that technicians are completing assigned training and progress is being tracked.
- Facilitate training in areas of expertise.
- Identify appropriate subject matter expert trainer and coordinate with subject matter experts to deliver the training needed.
- Schedule follow-up hands-on practice time for each trainee.
- Assess effectiveness of training
- Create and deliver assessments for each training module.
- Review assessments and retrain areas that need improvement.
- Gather formal and informal feedback on training program.

- Works with and backs up the Learning and Talent Development Specialist as needed.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required, completion of two (2) years of college preferred.
- Two (2) years progressively responsible work experience, including specialized training in wastewater treatment, physical sciences or engineering or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities desired.
- Virginia Wastewater Works Class 1 license and/or ABC Plant Maintenance Technologist Class III certification, or ability to obtain within two years of employment preferred.
- Organization skills, ability to organize data and plan, to work autonomously while prioritizing and multi-tasking several assignments; project management skills and ability to effectively balance multiple projects.

- Strong computer skills including working knowledge of learning management systems, content creation software and intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office Suite.
- Good to excellent writing skills and ability to use various written communication tools.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles includes how to successfully train and present.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee performs work indoors in a climate-controlled environment, with outdoor trips between buildings.
