About This Position
Staff Development Educator
Position Summary
Reporting to the Sr. Director of Clinical Education and the Manager of Staff Development, the Staff Development Educator supports, conducts and oversees an ongoing system of education for WPH employees through orientation, in-service education, and continuing education for the purpose of promoting professional development of employees.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Responsible for planning, presenting and evaluating educational programs for staff.
- Based on assessed learning needs, the Staff Development Educator collaborates with the Health Care Team to plan, implement and evaluate educational programs.
- Provides a variety of educational programs and services that assist staff members to acquire and maintain performance competencies as they provide care for patients of all ages.
- Provides continuing education programs to foster the development of staff, both licensed and unlicensed.
- Acts as liaison for AHA programming and scheduling for all clinical staff.
- Participates in the development and implementation of selected projects/activities across the organization.
- Acts as an educator, consultant, facilitator, clinician and resource person within the nursing division and
other departments as appropriate.
- Is accountable to ensure the competence of all hospital employees.
- Promotes the concept of lifelong learning by ensuring the ongoing professional growth and development of the nursing and clinical staff.
- Works collaboratively with Clinical Nurse Educators to assess learning needs and implement programs.
- Provides educational programs based on assessed learning needs:
- Provides educational offerings for staff as required/requested.
- Incorporates principles of adult learning and utilizes appropriate teaching methods
- Coordinates and/or provides in-service necessary for new programs, policies or equipment.
- Participates in the planning and/or presentation of Orientation & Continuing Education Programs
- Works collaboratively with Clinical Nurse Educators to orient and train staff on new equipment, policies and practices.
- Works as part of Epic training team and is credentialed as trainer.
- Ensures that educational programs are congruent with departmental and organizational mission and goals and produce desired outcomes relevant to the organization.
- Participates in ongoing Performance Improvement activities and initiatives as requested/ required.
- Enhances level of knowledge related to role as an educator, clinician, resource and clinical expert.
- Uses principles from theories of adult learning, organizational development, system change, and quality management
- Participates in quality improvement activities related to assessing and evaluating educational programs and other initiatives as needed
- Maintains educational and/or clinical competencies appropriate to role.
- Critically processes information and problem solves when working collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team.
- Maintains flexibility when managing multiple responsibilities
- Role models the WPH Behavioral Standards
- Is responsible for participation in committees, task forces and projects as appropriate
- Manages day to day operations of the department in absence of Director of Clinical Education
- Integrates patient rights and nursing ethics into all aspects of practice
- Adheres to the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics
- Adheres to the tenets of the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Licensed and currently registered as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State
- Master’s Degree in Nursing required
- National certification in clinical specialty, or staff development preferred, required after 2 years in position
- Experience in training on electronic health records
- Critical care experience preferred
