Director of Advising and ProgramsReporting to the Executive Director of Beyond Barnard, the Director of Advising & Programs oversees the strategic planning and execution of events, services, and resources that support students and alumnae in the areas of career development, graduate & professional school advising, support for applications to on-campus roles, and applications to competitive national and international fellowships. A member of Beyond Barnard’s Senior Staff, the Director collaborates across teams to ensure that advising and programming initiatives are executed in line with Beyond Barnard’s mission, vision, and values, along with the mission and strategic plan of Barnard College, in service of students and alumnae.

Job Description:

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Hire, train, and manage members of the Advising and Programs Team.
    • Recruit candidates and manage all aspects of the hiring process, including screening and interviewing.
    • Design training schedules and materials.
    • Ensure staff adherence to departmental and College-wide policies.
    • Lead a weekly team staff meeting as well as weekly one-on-one meetings with individual staff members.
    • Conduct performance evaluations with staff and manage performance improvement processes as required.
  • Lead cross-Beyond Barnard, cross-Division, and cross-campus collaboration in the creation of programming and resources. Oversee the dissemination of career resources via the College’s website, Handshake (its main portal for accessing career advising and supportive resources), Barnard Connect (its virtual mentorship network), and other related platforms.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Stakeholder Relations, lead the creation and implementation of Beyond Barnard’s annual Focus series, and other events and programs that bring alumnae and other experts to campus for the purposes of providing career development insights and perspectives. Supervise the execution of event series and provide direct management of program series/initiative each year.
  • Oversee advising and initiatives related to Advising and Programs’ key areas of service, serving as lead staff member for career exploration and preparation for both students and alumnae.
  • Manage Barnard’s Executive Mentorship Program.
  • Review, edit, and publish Beyond Barnard’s weekly newsletter, BB Weekly.
  • In partnership with the Associate Director, provide leadership and oversight to the Peer Career Advisor program.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a range of campus and external partners, including appropriate student groups, staff, faculty, alumnae, parents/families and representatives from graduate institutions and employers that recruit Barnard students, as appropriate.
  • Provide weekly availability for one-on-one advising to students and alumnae; direct advisees to appropriate staff and Peer Career Advisors for additional support; develop and share best practices on advising techniques. The specific number of required hours is set by the Executive Director of Beyond Barnard.
  • Design and implement processes for evaluating the success of advising and programmatic initiatives.
  • Present, and oversee the presentation of, regular workshops and webinars on best practices for pursuing a range of career and graduate paths; host information sessions, workshops, fairs or other programs for disseminating information. Oversee the development and updating of digital resources for a range of career and graduate paths.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, plan internal Beyond Barnard staff professional development workshops and trainings.
  • Manage Beyond Barnard’s staff advising schedule, including drop-in advising and monitoring staff advising commitments; adjust expectations as needed to meet advising demand.
  • Manage in-person and virtual events on evenings and weekends as necessary; support team-wide, division-wide, and College-wide events as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking/presentation.
  • Facility with current technology and web-based applications.
  • The ability to focus and work quickly, to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and absorb detail is essential.
  • The ability to understand and adhere to college and national policy and to decipher between confidential and need-to-know information is a must.
  • Ability to build and cultivate relationships with diverse on- and off-campus stakeholders, including students, alumnae, parents, staff members, faculty members, representatives of graduate programs, and employers.
  • Maturity, sensitivity, tact, judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to contribute to the tone of professionalism in the office and to remain calm and flexible under pressure
  • Ability to work effectively both as an individual and in a fast-paced and evolving setting that requires extensive cooperation and collaboration among all staff members

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required
  • 7 years of related work experience preferably in higher education, with background in academic/career advising or teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree
  • Experience managing professional staff

Salary Range: $95,000 - $105,000 annually

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
