Job Title:Substation Robotics Summer Student EmployeeLocation:Charlotte, NCJob Summary and Description:

This is an internship position for a student to support R&D projects related to substation in particular robotics activties. We are seeking students who can work at a minimum during the Summer 2026 semester (May-August).

The student will support the following activities:

  • Develop and apply tools to support substation research.

  • Ability to run structured lab tests with robotics and other lab equipment.

  • Manipulate point cloud date using tools like CloudCompare or similar Document methodologies and results in technical reports and presentations, and support collaborative research activities.

Qualifications:

  • Strong programming skills in Python; C++ is a plus.

  • Foundational understanding of AI/ML and computer vision concepts.

  • Coursework or project experience working with 3D data (e.g., point clouds).

  • Ability to manipulate point cloud data using tools like CloudCompare or similar.

  • Familiarity with Linux environments and command-line tools.

  • Ability to run structured lab tests, follow safety procedures, and operate equipment independently.

  • Strong documentation skills (experiment logs, test reports, clean code).

  • Good communication skills and ability to clearly summarize findings.

  • Motivated to learn new tools and techniques in robotics and AI.

  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical mindset.

Ideal candidate:

  • Experience with 3D object detection, segmentation, or 3D perception algorithms.

  • Hands-on experience with YOLO, VLMs, or other deep learning models.

  • Familiarity with PyTorch, TensorFlow, and OpenCV.

  • Experience with Docker and containers.

  • Experience with ROS and Nvidia Issac.

  • Experience deploying AI models on edge devices (Jetson, Raspberry Pi).

  • Exposure to SLAM, mapping, or visual localization algorithms.

  • Experience with sensor integration (LiDAR, cameras, IMUs).

  • Familiarity with Gazebo, RViz, or simulation tools.

  • Experience analyzing datasets and interpreting experimental results.

  • Git or version control experience.

  • Basic math background in linear algebra, geometry, or 3D transformations.

  • Basic understanding of robotic manipulation, and inverse kinematics.

  • Basic web development experience (optional).

Additional skill experience:

  • Hands-on experience with the Boston Dynamics Spot robot.

  • Experience deploying CV/AI systems in industrial or field robotics environments.

  • Previous research publications or strong academic project portfolio.

  • Experience with CUDA workflows or optimization for embedded/edge platforms.

  • Knowledge of multi-sensor fusion or advanced 3D reconstruction.

  • Interest in cutting-edge AI, multimodal models, and robotics research.

The hourly rate range for Student positions are:

  • Undergraduate: $16-29 per hour

  • Masters: $27-33 per hour

  • Ph.D: $31-36 per hour

These ranges are an estimate, and the actual hourly rate may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The hourly rate may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.

As an EPRI Student, you will not participate in EPRI’s Benefit Programs which includes health insurance, retirement benefits, vacation, sick leave (except as set required by law) and holiday pay. However, as a Student employee you are eligible for the benefits of Social Security, State Disability Insurance, and Workers’ Compensation Insurance.

For Student positions which require one to relocate to an EPRI office. Relocation assistance is not provided and the student will be responsible for covering all relocation costs/expenses.

EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
