General Job Summary:
The Account Manager is responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships with new and existing customers to generate new business and support revenue and carload growth. This role requires proactive engagement, strategic planning, and consistent communication to ensure customer satisfaction and long-term partnership success.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluate market requirements and competitor capabilities.
- Communicate with customers at appropriate intervals and schedule sales appointments.
- Develop, generate and present detailed proposals as needed
- Collaborate with the Business Development team to strategize on client-related issues.
- Identify and develop business opportunities within existing accounts to maximize profitability and growth.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all customer‑specific matters.
- Develop business plans and forecasts for customers and provide management with forecasting insights.
- Create new sales and service programs to support company growth.
- Proactively assess, clarify and validate customer needs on an ongoing basis
- Develop and maintain reports to forecast and track key account metrics.
- Assist with high-severity requests or issues and escalate when necessary.
- Develop knowledge and proficiency in railroad marketing.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Submit weekly progress reports and ensure accuracy of all submitted data.
- Clearly communicate the progress of monthly and quarterly initiatives to internal stakeholders
- Attend functions, conferences and events to maintain customer relationships
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Business Development.
Basic Qualifications and Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver’s License
- Minimum of two (2) years of railroad experience, or equivalent experience in an industrial sales/marketing environment
- Above average ability to read, write, and communicate (speak, hear, and understand) in English
- Excellent listening, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Experience delivering client-focused solutions based on customer needs
- Above average skills with Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Ability to proactively listen and anticipate customers issues and resolve to customers and company’s satisfaction
- Ability to speak effectively before potential customers, economic development groups, customer groups, and all levels of company personnel.
- Strong interpersonal skills; optimistic, energetic, and professional demeanor.
- Handles confidential financial information appropriately.
Preferred Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Previous railroad marketing/sales/account management experience
- Five years of experience in an industrial sales/marketing environment
- Read and comprehend written safety rules, procedures, and safety manuals.
- Ability to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations. At times working under extreme pressure with a heavy workload and tight deadlines.
Work Environment:
- Primarily in a field environment
- Working in/around industrial facilities wearing appropriate PPE
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required.
