Job Description

The Street Outreach Worker supports the Rod’s House mission through 4 key responsibilities; 1) meet and build relationships with young people on street outreach 2) represent Rod’s House and share the organizational mission with schools and community groups 3) work with Street Outreach Coordinator to drive the work of at ending youth homelessness throughout all of Yakima County 4) communicate feedback critical to enhancing the procedures and policies at Rod’s House.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct street outreach across Yakima County;

  • Manage public-facing phone line for Outreach services;

  • Provide basic needs to young people;

  • Facilitate peer-based crisis support for young people;

  • Conduct “in-reach” at other RH sites;

  • Shadow other organizations’ outreach teams to gain further knowledge of best practices;

  • Assist Outreach Program Coordinator record data in HMIS and Outreach Dossier, as needed

  • Plan and coordinate outreach activities including but not limited to email, phone, and in-person communications;

  • Create and maintain connections with other nonprofits and school districts;

  • Coordinate and maintain a community resource guide for young people;

  • Attend tabling events when needed;

  • Professional networking and agency engagement;

  • Ensure the Outreach team has healthy inventories of informational materials to be distributed on both street and community outreach, including RH brochures, business cards, and other relevant documents for the public;

  • Complete End of Month reports as determined by the supervisor;

  • Complete all other duties as assigned and as required.

Education and/or Experience

  • High School diploma or GED Required;

  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) Preferred

  • Experience working directly with youth and young adults, particularly youth and young adults experiencing homelessness

  • Experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma, specifically severe mental illnesses and substance use disorders

  • An understanding of and adherence to a strengths-based philosophy with youth and young adults


Additional Agency Requirements (for all staff)

  • Pass a Washington State criminal background check Required;

  • Pass a Federal (FBI) criminal background check Required;

  • Valid driver’s license and auto insurance is Required;

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate;

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

Shifts include overnight, evening, and early mornings including holidays. This position requires daily interactions with youth experiencing homelessness and with community members, social service providers, and other organizations. Physical requirements for the position include frequent walking, hearing, seeing, speaking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, climbing, and repetitive motions. This position requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, pull, or move objects. Ability to safely drive a 14-passenger van is strongly preferred.
