This role is a senior fundraising leadership position focused on securing and growing transformational philanthropic investments that directly support a nationally recognized media and journalism mission. You will lead a high-impact principal giving program designed to identify, cultivate, and steward ultra-high-net-worth donors capable of making seven- to nine-figure commitments. Acting as both strategist and relationship builder, you will shape philanthropic opportunities that align donor passions with impactful storytelling, public service journalism, and cultural programming. The position requires close collaboration with executive leadership, board members, and cross-functional development teams. You will oversee a high-value donor portfolio while building scalable systems to expand the principal gifts pipeline. This is a highly strategic, externally facing role that combines vision, influence, and deep relationship management.
- Lead the strategy and execution of the principal giving program, focusing on gifts of $1M+ and cultivating prospects for $5M+ transformational commitments.
- Develop and expand a strong pipeline of principal gift prospects across sectors such as media, technology, philanthropy, arts, and civic leadership.
- Conduct high-level prospect research and long-term cultivation strategies to move donors from engagement to major commitment.
- Manage a portfolio of approximately 40–50 principal gift prospects and donors, ensuring tailored engagement and stewardship strategies.
- Partner with executive leadership, including senior development leaders, newsroom executives, and board members, on donor cultivation and solicitation efforts.
- Personally solicit and help close major and principal gifts in collaboration with senior leadership.
- Design and oversee stewardship strategies that ensure meaningful, long-term donor engagement and impact communication.
- Collaborate across development teams to align fundraising strategies and strengthen organizational fundraising outcomes.
- 10–12+ years of fundraising experience, with significant expertise in major and principal gift development.
- Proven success securing $1M+ gifts, with strong preference for experience closing $5M+ commitments.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and cultivate ultra-high-net-worth individuals and philanthropic leaders.
- Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate mission-driven priorities into compelling funding opportunities.
- Exceptional relationship management skills, including experience working with senior executives and board-level stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and inspire diverse audiences.
- Experience in journalism, higher education, cultural institutions, or large mission-driven organizations is highly desirable.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience required.
- Competitive salary range of $147,000 – $165,000 USD annually
