About This Position
Position Summary:
The Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Lead Counselor supervises campers’ participation in structured and unstructured activities while demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of campers served. Interacts appropriately with campers in a variety of situations using appropriate positive behavior management techniques. The CIT Lead Counselor must commit to lead by example and live by the Girl Scout Law.
Key Responsibilities:
Ability to supervise campers’ participation in structured and unstructured activities
Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers served.
Interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations, appropriately modeling behavior in a positive manner
Ability to accompany campers to main program areas, lead small and large group activities
Direct supervision and safety of the unit of Counselors in Training (CIT)
Work with the Assistant Director of Camps to plan and implement CIT lesson planning
Evaluate and share learning progress of CITs weekly
Provide leadership and guidance to campers and staff, share program resources with other staff
Participation in all aspects of camp programming
Set standards/examples of courtesy, good taste, respect, and proper manners throughout camp and in the dining hall
Organize camp living in units, including housekeeping, activities and program for both campers and staff
Keep unit records and make reports as required, carry out written unit schedule
Coordinate unit plans with those of other units and all camp activities including campfires, ceremonies, special events, and meals unless specifically excused by the Assistant Director of Camps or the Director of Camps
Teach camping skills and appreciation/respect for the outdoors
Identify and respond appropriately to hazards and emergencies
Instruct campers in emergency procedures
Responsible for camper welfare for complying with the instructions from the Health Supervisor in relation to camper health needs.
Carry out other non-essential duties as delegated by the assistant director of camps including assisting staff in other cabins, assisting in the office, assisting in the kitchen, and assisting with camp programs or events.
Supervise mealtimes.
Other duties as assigned.
Essential Requirements:
This position requires registration as a member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A
Preferred to be 21 years of age.
Hold the minimum certification requirements of CPR and First Aid.
Be fully certified in program areas.
Prior camp experience preferred or working with youth.
Ability/experience to teach and supervise adults and youth
Knowledge of the Girl Scout program preferred
Flexible and committed to personal and professional development.
Good judgement in anticipating and preventing accidents.
Be able to act calmly, quickly, and give and/or follow directions during an emergency.
Knowledge of safety practices as applicable.
Must be ready and able to communicate well with girls and staff and be flexible about programming options.
Equipment Used: Program supplies, specialty activity supplies, cleaning supplies, walkie-talkies, computer software programs such as Word, Publisher, Excel, and the Internet.
Physical Activities: Typing, reaching, talking, hearing, bending, stooping and repetitive motions, driving and riding in car or van, dancing, hiking, walking, running,
Physical Demands: Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time. Respond quickly to potential emergencies. Ability to lift 20 pounds.
Software: Microsoft Office Suite; Microsoft Outlook or equivalent calendaring systems
Work Conditions: Activities occur both in an indoor and outdoor environment.
